2021 William Reid Stakes preview – Friday, March 19

The final Group 1 of the night racing season is the William Reid Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley this Friday. The honour roll for the race stacks up with some of the best in the country, and you do not have to look too far back to see the great Black Caviar on the list of past winners. In a wide-open affair, the Anthony Cummings-trained Libertini is a $5 favourite to take out his first Group 1, and you would expect it to be $6 or $7 the field come race time given the number of proven stars engaged.

With plenty of early speed in the mix, expect Ancestry and Pippie to renew their battle from the Oakleigh Plate at the front of the field, with Bella Vella and Hey Doc not too far away in the running. Brooklyn Hustle, Masked Crusader and September Run will be flying home after settling in the second half of the pack.

Brooklyn Hustle has had zero luck in both runs this campaign, yet she still flew home to not be beaten far in both the Oakleigh Plate and the Newmarket Handicap. She will give her rivals a massive start over the 1200m, as we expect the mare to settle stone motherless, but she has the turn of foot to finish right over the top of them. Brooklyn Hustle loves The Valley, where she has registered two wins and a placing from five runs. We concede luck will play a big factor, but it looks to be third time the charm for the Jason Warren mare as she pushes for her maiden Group 1 success.

Despite not winning a Group 1 in her impressive career to date, Libertini is clearly the class runner in the William Reid Stakes field. She has drawn out in barrier 13 and will need luck early on to avoid being trapped wide in the running, but her impressive record when resuming is hard to ignore. Libertini has won twice from four first-up runs, with a runner-up performance in there as well. She beat home the eventual Everest winner Classique Legend when first up in the spring, and with a bit of luck she can power home to land a deserved Group 1 win.

Having been well held in the Bob Hoysted Handicap when first up, Hey Doc returns to the track and distance which saw him beat a similar field home in the Manikato Stakes back in the spring. Trainer Calvin McEvoy suggested the four-time Group 1 winner would only benefit from that first-up run, and who are we to doubt him? Having won on four out of seven starts at Moonee Valley, we know he loves the track. With Luke Currie on board, Hey Doc will sit on the heels of the leaders and could spring a surprise at odds.
