Who will replace Greg Miles as Victorian metro race caller?
FOLLOWING the announcement that veteran race caller Greg Miles will hang up the binoculars after three decades as Victoria’s metropolitan go-to guy, Sportsbet.com.au has opened a market on who Miles’ successor will be.
Former Sydney caller Mark Shean is opened as the $3 favourite for the gig alongside Terry Bailey, who may get the preferential treatment.
Miles stated he would be “on the panel to select my successor”, which may give Bailey the inside alley given the duo are contemporaries and friends in the tight-knit Victorian racing industry.
Aside from the stand out two, there are plenty of race callers from around the country in single figures.
Our next-best elects come from Sydney and Victoria’s south respectively.
The voice of Sydney racing Darren Flindell is at $7, and he is joined at the quote by popular Warrnambool carninval race caller Rick McIntosh, who has thrilled punters for years through his passion and enthusiasm for the craft.
The most surprising person in the market is Bruce McAvaney.
The Channel Seven stalwart is at $21 to take over from Miles, but given how passionate he is about thoroughbred racing it would not be surprising to see him throw his hat into the ring.
The team at Sportbet.com.au clearly had a lot of fun putting together the market. Spokesperson Will Byrne used the racing vernacular when describing how the company sees this market unfolding.
“It would be special if Bruce McAvaney got the job and he’s certainly right up there with the best of them. But coming into the straight, Shean and Bailey are neck and neck, there’s not much in it, so we’ll leave it to the judge,” Byrne said.
