Werribee Racing Club is set to host an eight-race card on Thursday afternoon and Horsebetting’s Victorian form expert presents his best bets, top odds and free quaddie selections. The track has come up a Good 4, with the rail out 4m the entire circuit, with the meeting commencing at 1:30pm AEDT.

Werribee Best Bet – The Economist

Barry Fox sends his three-year-old Danerich gelding The Economist following a narrow second-place finish at Sandown on December 15. He was beaten a half-length on that day where he simply was unable to run down a leader who seemingly had every favour in the running. He was able to run past Port Louis who ties in strong Group 1 form and if The Economist brings a similar effort to Werribee on Thursday, he should be too good for this lot. From barrier 12, Michael Poy will have him settled closer to the rear of the field, but if big grey can show a similar turn of foot as he did at Sandown, he is a clear best bet on Thursday.

Next Best Bet at Werribee – Inthelapofthegods

In the opening leg of the quaddie, we are expecting the Nathan Dunn-trained Inthelapofthegods to continue his consistent prep and bring up a deserved win. The five-year-old son of Sidestep was well beaten when finishing second behind Pilote at Geelong last time out but put a decent enough gap on Milestone back in third to suggest he is the one to beat on Thursday. He steps out of BM64 grade on that day, into a BM58 2025m affair and as long as he handles the 63.5kg he may just be too well-graded for this lot. He is set to gain an uncontested lead and under a well-rated steer from Arron Lynch, we expect Inthelapofthegods to be too hard to run down.

Best Value Bet at Werribee – Pearl Rain

Fresh off a near three-month spell, the Patrick Payne-trained Pearl Rain will be looking to remain undefeated, having won convincingly on debut at Echuca on October 1. The three-year-old Al Maher filly had to settle last on debut, but with a strong turn of foot was able to finish over the top of her rivals to suggest she is one to follow going forward. The step into Class 1 company is aided by the fact Celine Gaudray hops on board claiming 1.5kg. She goes around with just 55kg on her back and if she can replicate the turn of foot she showed on debut, she looks to be a great play at a double figure quote.
