Queensland stewards have closed an inquiry into the late arrival of Night’s Watch for a race at Doomben last week and fined Australia’s leading trainer Darren Weir $500.

Stewards charged Weir with failing to present Night’s Watch in time to race at Doomben.

Night’s Watch was favourite for last Saturday’s Shoot Out Quality but didn’t arrive at Doomben until 22 minutes before the race and had already been scratched.

The gelding arrived in Brisbane from Melbourne about 3am but there was apparently a mix-up by staff in race times.

Chief steward Allan Reardon said Weir had pleaded guilty and been informed by email that he had been fined $500.

“We also informed him about his right to appeal,” Reardon said.
