Weight right for Crafty Cop at Gold Coast

Crafty Cop will get some weight relief on recent starts when he runs at the Gold Coast.

A big drop in the weights has boosted stable confidence that Crafty Cop can continue the Anderson-Heathcote training partnership’s run of success.

Trainers Chris Anderson and Robert Heathcote started their partnership on May 1 and have since prepared 38 winners.

The partnership has had winners at the past five metropolitan Saturday meetings and hope to make it six in a row on Saturday.

Crafty Cop will be the stable’s representative in the $105,000 Ross MacLean Open Handicap (1200m) at the Gold Coast.

The gelding has been running in restricted class races, winning at Doomben with 59kg and then being anchored by 60kg when fifth at the same track three weeks ago.

Crafty Cop drops six kilos to 54kg on Saturday and Anderson believes that gives him a chance.

“He was stakes placed earlier in his career at his second race start and he has probably paid the price at the weights since,” Anderson said.

“Crafty Cop is probably better with the sting out of the track but he gets his chance here.”

Crafty Cop is one of several horses with the Anderson-Heathcote stable who race in the colours of Sydney owner Wilf Mula whose best horses have included the Mick Price-trained Group One winner Flying Artie.

“Rob had a lot of luck for the Mulas most notably with Stella Victoria who is a stakes winner,” Anderson said.

“We hope to get a lot more big race winners for them and maybe Saturday will be a start.”
