Wednesday racing at Canterbury with form and free tips, May 24

Midweek tips

RACING is in full swing this winter and Canterbury is back with another quality seven-race card this Wednesday.

We have form and free tips for every race, which includes some even betting fields where punters should be able to find a good mix of favoured and value runners.

The quality of midweek racing is improving and we are seeing the next big things of Australian racing coming through the Wednesday meetings.

Canterbury starts with the Casino Prince @ Vinery Handicap for the juveniles where the big stables will do battle.

Race 1 – Casino Prince @ Vinery Handicap (1100m)

Beau Geste is on debut for Darren Beadman and that should be respected in a small field. The well-bred son of Street Cry and Haut Ton finished third in a recent trial where it wasn’t asked to extend very much. The inside draw is going to be a great asset and the number one jockey has been elected for this runner, as opposed to stablemate Totten.

Last Starfighter is also on debut for the Waterhouse/Bott combination and it should have plenty of natural pace. The two-year-old by Star Witness has had three trials for one win, that coming last time out at Kembla Grange where it put three lengths on its rivals. Trial form can be misleading, but this stable usually has them ready to fire and senior rider Tim Clark will ride.

Race 2 – Tabcorp Handicap (1100m)

Lipizzan has obvious potential and its most recent run in the Woodlands Stakes was full of class. The Gary Portelli-trained filly finished second behind Debonairly, despite being at long odds and it will be shorter in the market this time around. Rachel King takes 2kg off its back and she will need to fly the gates from barrier 10, but this filly has more than enough early toe.

Envy Of All has been close up in both starts and it was only caught late behind a subsequent winner last start. The James Cummings-trained filly ran a nose behind Viridine last start at Rosehill and it won well on Saturday against much tougher opposition than this. The daughter of Your Song has experience on this track when it ran second on debut and Hugh Bowman is a telling addition to the saddle. Expect bookmakers to have it short in the market again.

Race 3- Ranvet Handicap (1250m)

Forever Dream looked to have more wins in store when it won by 1.8 lengths on debut at Canterbury. The Richard Freedman-trained gelding was heavily supported with punters at $2.70 and it proved far too good for them. It sat last in the field of four and exerted its class late, so the small field will help again here. Blake Shinn will likely drop it back from barrier seven and let it work home well again.

Zonk has above average ability and the Les Bridge stable is in good form. The three-year-old filly won well at Gosford in March and it has been defeated twice since by White Moss which ran well on Saturday. It drops back in distance for this which shouldn’t be a problem as its win came over 1000m and it drops nicely in weight to 54kg with Clark in the saddle.

Race 4 – Tab R72 Handicap (1900m)

The Gavel finished sixth last Wednesday, but it settled too far back and never really got a run at them. The Ron Quinton-trained gelding was an impressive winner late last year, but it has only been battling since. This is about the easiest field it will meet this season and it looks well-placed to break through for the overdue win. Andrew Adkins takes 2kg off its back which also helps.

Lead Choreographer is an imported runner for Chris Waller which is having its fifth Australian start. The Sea The Stars four-year-old was considered good enough to run in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot and despite showing little in Australia, this distance suits best and the addition of Bowman is a positive. It has astute owners in the China Horse Club and much more will be expected of it here.

Race 5 – Schweppes Handicap (1580m)

Shield Wall has won only one from seven starts, but it has good ability and is rarely far away from the prize. The Waller-trained three-year-old scored its maiden win two back at Kembla Grange before running second on this track behind Cordero lats start. The daughter of Savabeel should have strengthened up nicely with that run and it’s a good sign to see Bowman sticking with it.

Stablemate Pound Sterling is a consistent runner which is long overdue another win. The Written Tycoon gelding has won one of its 12 starts, but has placed in six and comes into this having placed in four of its last five. The three-year-old ran fourth behind Sisken at Scone last start which has been franked nicely and the only negative is Bowman decided to ride Shield Wall and it rises up in weight.

Race 6 – Tab Rewards Handicap (1580m)

Estikhraaj has ability and it’s coming off an impressive win at Scone. The Waller-trained winner of only two from 20 starts won by over two lengths earlier this month and now that the confidence is up, it might be able to start stringing wins together. It has drawn deep in barrier 13, but it’s another good ride for Bowman and it will likely try and lead from out wide.

Surfin’ Safari is coming off a placing in the County Cup at Scone, but it shouldn’t be overlooked in this. The Paul Perry-trained four-year-old went close to winning last start and its start prior was a solid win at Newcastle. It has placed in two from three starts at Canterbury which is a good sign and it could add some value in a tough race.

Race 7 – Bowermans Office Furniture Handicap (1250m)

Best Guess was well-favoured to win at Wyong last start where it finished fourth, but the run wasn’t to suit and it should get all favours from the inside draw. The Waller-trained gelding looked the goods prior to that when winning by 3.3 lengths at Gosford and anything close to that form will take it close. We’re expecting bookmakers to have it firm in the market again.

Bratislava has won three of its six starts and there was plenty to like about its most recent win. The Beadman-trained gelding scored narrowly on this track and it stays in the same grade for this. The three-year-old has drawn awkwardly in barrier 11 with an apprentice in the saddle, but it’s tough to overlook its recent form and the 3kg claim should offset any negative factors.
