Autumn racing is starting to heat up as The Championships are fast approaching, which means there are plenty of midweek types looking to progress to the next level.

There are some quality thoroughbreds on show this Wednesday which includes the likes of Super Maxi, Sangiovese and the highly-regarded Philosophy.

Race 1 – Tab Rewards Handicap (2400m)

Chris Waller lines up last start winner El Novio which turned around some poor form at Warwick Farm. The four-year-old gelding was well-favoured going into the race, so there was plenty of stable confidence and it should be confidently backed again. It defeated No Return narrowly, which has subsequently run well on Saturday and having Brenton Avdulla in the saddle from barrier one is a bonus.

Most Exalted is another last start winner which has plenty of potential. The James Cummings-trained gelding won well at Canterbury by a length when running as the odds-on favourite and it will enjoy stepping up over this distance for the first time. It’s bred to see it out and Hugh Bowman taking the ride is a big indicator. We’re expecting Most Exalted to be well supported in the market and it will likely sit back and launch late.

Race 2 – Hyland Race Colours Plate (1000m)

Hugh Bowman looks to have another good ride here with debutante Sambro. The well-bred son of Fastnet Rock finished fourth in a trial last month before winning a trial at Rosehill on January 31. It looked to have plenty in reserve and punters should always take notice of when Bowman partners a talented Waller-trained juvenile. It has drawn well in barrier four and we’re expecting bookmakers to have it short in the market.

Oxford Bella is a well-related type from the Kim Waugh stables and it has looked better than average in its two trials. The daughter of Bel Esprit is bred for speed and it has shown that in two trials wins. The first came at Wyong by a length and it was able to withstand the heavy track to win by a length at Newcastle on January 25. It’s going to have good gate speed and a win wouldn’t surprise.

Race 3 – Tab Plate (1100m)

Pirapala was heavily supported on debut when running third at Wyong and again when running third at Warwick Farm, but the wet track conditions didn’t suit. The Gerald Ryan-trained filly has since finished second in a trial at Rosehill and it should have matured nicely from its maiden campaign and any horse from the China Horse Club ownership should be respected. It jumps from a good barrier of two and a nice run is expected.

Red Hearts is knocking on the door following two starts for two placings. The Snowden-trained filly won consecutive trials before finishing third on this track behind the likes of Cocoexcel and Savvan on debut. It was only narrowly beaten at Canterbury last start when running as the $1.70 favourite and it should be at better odds for this. It won’t take long for this daughter of Lonhro to break the shackles and score its first win.

Race 4 – Theraces Handicap (1400m)

Saxophone hasn’t been far away in two race day starts and improvement is expected. The John O’Shea-trained gelding finished second on debut at Canterbury and it resumed this campaign with another solid placing. It hasn’t quite lived up to expectations yet, but the son of Lonhro has plenty of upside and James Doyle has found his groove in Australia.

Think Like A Bird didn’t quite fly on debut when fourth at Warwick Farm as the favourite, but expect a better showing here. The Hawkes-trained filly won a good trial on January 31 which holds it in good stead for this and it should only get better with more racing under its belt. The daughter of So You Think has drawn a touch awkwardly, but consider in this.

Race 4 tip: Saxophone to win at CrownBet.com.au

Race 5 – Pluck@Vinery Handicap (1600m)

Top Of My List is a highly-regarded type which is heading places. The High Chaparral mare won at Warwick Farm on debut and its subsequent runs have included a placing at Rosehill behind Imposing Lass and a last start placing at Warwick Farm behind Philosophy. It looks well weighted at 56.5kg and having Hugh Bowman in the saddle is worth noting. Tough to beat in a small field.

Awoke has a fair amount of ability and it shouldn’t be overlooked despite running sixth when fresh up. The three-year-old filly needed the run and the rise in distance will be ideal here. It hasn’t won since July last year, but it has defeated some handy types in the past and trainer Chris Waller should have it firing now. Brenton Avdulla takes the ride from barrier six.

Race 6 – Tab Handicap (1000m)

Super Maxi is a quality gelding for Team Hawkes which is looking to rebound after a poor effort in the Brian Crowley Stakes at Randwick in October. The Redoute’s Choice three-year-old won three times last campaign and all were quality wins, so it’s a good chance here and it has been primed with a trial at Rosehill on January 31. This isn’t an easy first-up assignment, but it should be considered.

Sangiovese comes out of the Bjorn Baker stables with good form and it will enjoy this class. The four-year-old finished fifth against the likes of Scarlet Rain and Badajoz last time out at Rosehill and its form prior included a win over Machinegun Jubs. That’s strong form and we think it’s ready to strike at midweek level.

Race 6 tip: Sangiovese to win at Palmerbet.com.au

Race 7 – Schweppes Handicap (1400m)

Henry The Createth is a winner of three from four starts and it scored with authority last start. The Michael Freedman-trained gelding won its first two starts which included a win over the likes of Brulee and it comes into this having won by 1.5 lengths at Kembla Grange last start. It will get every chance from barrier two with Avdulla in the saddle.

Philosophy has won both starts this campaign and looms as one of the major chances. The O’Shea-trained mare scored by just under a length at Beaumont fresh up before winning by a length at Warwick Farm. It was able to defeat Top Of The List on that occasion and that could be a good form guide for this. The daughter of Street Cry will only improve with time and it’s a strong winning hope at midweek level.

Race 7 tip: Philosophy to win at Sportsbet.com.au
