Seriously, how bloody good is the Bool?!

Day 1 of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival awaits us on Tuesday where ten-races are set to be run, including the time-honoured Brierly Steeplechase as the feature event of the day. Horsebetting’s Victorian form expert presents his best bets, top odds and free quaddie selections for Day 1 of the carnival.

The track is rated a Soft 7, with the rail in the true position throughout and racing is set to commence at 11:20am AEST.

Brierly Chase Top Tip – Valac

The Brierly Chase has a $175,000 prize pool on offer and we are hoping the Ben & JD Hayes-trained Valac can take home the majority of it. The 10-year-old gelding won a novice hurdle on Day 3 of The Bool last year and 12 months on is now favourite for the Brierly. He comes to this on the back of a comfortable victory when first-up at Pakenham and despite jockey Aaron Mitchell pulling him up to a walk inside the 50m and barely holding off Budd Fox in dramatic circumstances. The eye-catching grey is a near faultless jumper and a genuine will to win, we expect Valac to be the one they need to beat and the $2.70 on offer with Bet365 is too hard to ignore.

Best Bet at Warrnambool – Pontedera

We will be hoping the Michael Hickmott and Jamie Kah combination can bring home a winner for us in the first flat event of the carnival when they team up with Pontedera. The three-year-old Our Vespa gelding flew home at Oakbank on April 16 to go down to Vivienne by a neck in a race where he pulled up lame in the off foreleg. Arguably, his run was the run of the race despite not winning and with even luck this time round, he should be breaking his maiden at start three. From the low draw of barrier two, look for Kah to have him settled midifield in the moving line, where he should gain a nice tow into the race at a crucial point. Pontedera’s turn of foot is more than good enough for a race like this and we are happy to load into the $3.70 with online betting sites.

Next Best at Warrnambool – Heart Of Puissance

12 months ago, the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Heart Of Puissance was sent around as favourite in the Listed Warrnambool Cup, but this year he is set to go around in a handicap event where he simply looks a class above. His first-up record is more than decent, with a win and two minor placings from four runs when resuming from a spell. He’ll appreciate getting his toe into the ground on a Soft 7 and with two wins and three minor placings from seven starts on rain affected going, he will certainly handle the conditions. Look for John Allen to have the chestnut settled in the second half of the field and armed with a nice turn of foot, we expect Heart Of Puissance to be the one finishing the best down the centre of the track.

Best Value at Warrnambool – Fine Weather

The Mitchell Freedman-trained Fine Weather has been racing in career best form this campaign and we’re willing to give him a push at a double figure quote. Despite drawing barrier 16, the Night of Thunder gelding is a front running horse at the best of times, so his early speed is sure to negate the tricky barrier draw. Having missed the top three only three times in 12 career starts, he is as consistent a horse you could hope for going around in BM70 company. He may not have an electric turn of foot, but we know he will stay all day and from an on-speed position will give them something to run down. We’re happy to launch into the $10 on offer from online bookmakers for Fine Weather.
