What Warrnambool Races
Where Warrnambool Racing Club – 2-64 Grafton Rd, Warrnambool VIC 3280
When Thursday, December 8, 2022
First Race 1:30pm AEDT

This Thursday, Warrnambool Racing Club will host a very-competitive eight-race program. The track is currently rated a Good 4, but with rain on the forecast for Wednesday, we could be on a softer track come raceday. The rail will be in the 8m position for the entire circuit, which should prove to play favourable to on-speed runners. The first race of the day will kick off at 1:30pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Warrnambool – Bavicia

In the 2000m Maiden Plate opener, we will be siding with the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Bavicia, who has been working his way up to a win this preparation. This three-year-old colt has finished in the placings at his last two starts over 1400m and 1600m, where he was taking ground off the eventual winner in the concluding stages of both races. Now that this son of Almanzor finds a race that lacks depth and is over a more suitable distance of 2000m, this guy gets a lot of things in his favour for his fourth-up run. On debut this colt raced in the Listed Anzac Day Stakes over 1400m, finishing sixth in what has turned out be a very good form race with the likes of Tijuana and Perfect Thought winning nice races during the Victorian Spring Carnival.

Next Best at Warrnambool – Laureus

In the Benchmark 64 Handicap over 1400m, the Tom Dabernig-trained Laurues will be looking to win back-to-back races after recording her first career win at Bendigo last start over 1300m on November 24. This daughter of Shamus Award only won her last start by half a length, but she was eased down over the final 50m after gaining enough of a margin over the fast finishing, Frenchmans Bay. This four-year-old mare has begun her career in great fashion, finishing fifth on debut and finishing in the top two at her last two starts, so now that she has broken through for her first win, we expect her to keep on improving and be better for it. At her first three starts, this mare has started south of $5 with online bookmakers, which shows us that punters believe she has a lot of ability. From barrier 10 on Thursday, she will have to jump well and try and cross the field to sit on-pace, but if Logan McNeil can get her to the front half of the field without doing too much work, she can win again.

Race 5 – Silk #7 Laureus (10)

Best Value at Warrnambool – Aikhal

Our best value bet of the day will come up in the third race, over 1700m, where the Symon Wilde-trained Aikhal will be looking to go one better at his second career start, after running a nice second on debut behind a smart one at Casterton on October 18. This lightly raced four-year-old gelding was a fair way back from the leader and eventual winner on the home turn on debut, but he lengthened nicely to take a good amount of ground off the winner, who was eased down. This son of Tavistock is bred to get out over a distance, so rising from 1400m last start to 1700m on Thursday should be a positive for this guy. Harry Coffey will have to take his medicine and go back from barrier 10, but if he gets this guy to the outside on the home turn, he will be storming home late to stake his claim.

Best Value

Race 3 – Silk #1 Aikhal (10)

4yo Gelding | T: Symon Wilde | J: Harry Coffey (59.5kg)
