Wangaratta Best Bet – Designs

The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Designs was a deadset certainty beaten at Sandown on December 8 and looks to be a clear best bet at Wangaratta on Thursday. The four-year-old Vancouver mare settled on the leader’s back on that occasion and simply found no gaps at a crucial time. Once she did see clear air, she leapt out of the ground, but it was too little, too late. She draws out wide in barrier nine, and we expect Damien Thornton to take luck out of the occasion this time and have her settled up on speed outside the leader. Designs is clearly the class horse in the race, and if she is at her best, she should be too good for this lot in the third leg of the quaddie.

Next Best Bet at Wangaratta – Otelo

The Ben Brisbourne-trained Otelo was a smart winner last time out, and we expect him to bring up another victory on Thursday. He smashed his rivals over 1000m on December 11 here at Wangaratta, and with the step up to 1170m looking ideal, he should be too good once again. The three-year-old son of Shalaa is set to go around with just 54.5kg on his back following Hannah Edgley’s 3kg claim, and if the apprentice can find cover from barrier nine, Otelo looks the goods once again. Armed with a strong turn of foot, look for him to be primed to strike when turning.

Next Best Again at Wangaratta – Miss Piper

The Jason Warren & Dean Krongold-trained Miss Piper comes to the Wangaratta 1000m following a fourth-place finish at her Victorian debut at Cranbourne on December 10. The former Queenslander simply did not settle when up outside the leader on that night and was beaten inside the final 150m. It is a bit of a throw at the stumps, but we expect her to improve second-up now that she has experience going the ‘Victorian way’. If Jamie Noonan can have her settled handy to the speed from barrier five, we anticipate a strong performance on Thursday.
