Racing heads to Wagga Wagga on Sunday afternoon as Murrumbidgee Turf Club plays host to a competitive eight-race program. The $45,000 Murrumbidgee Cup is the feature event and will be a good guide for the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup on May 5. We should have picturesque conditions with some superb weather for racegoers and a strong chance of a Good 4 surface. The rail is out +3m from the 1400m to the winning post and remains in the true position throughout the rest of the course. The first race is set to get underway at 12:20pm AEST.
Murrumbidgee Cup Selection: Toretto
Toretto brings some quality form-lines to this year’s Murrumbidgee Cup and looks beautifully placed by the Matthew Dale yard. He’s well into his preparation now with seven starts under his belt; however, this is the first time this campaign he’s seen the 1800m. He comes through a BM72 contest behind former Kembla Grange Classic winner Pretty Amazing at Hawkesbury on April 5; he didn’t appreciate the Heavy surface on offer but showed some class to find third after stealing a rails runs when turning for home. This firmer surface will do wonders for this son of Press Statement, and jockey Nick Heywood has a terrific record on him. He’s drawn barrier one, so we don’t expect him to be too far back in this eight-horse field. He’ll need some luck getting off the rails turning into the straight, but if the breaks come his way, Toretto looks a good bet in the third race of the program.

Best Bet: Magnetic
In the penultimate, we think the favourite, Sparring, may be vulnerable over the 1200m, so we’ve elected to look at Magnetic to cause a minor upset. He comes through the same race at Albury over the 900m and stuck to the task nicely when getting pestered throughout up on speed. Sparring got the saloon passage to beat Magnetic home by just under a length on the line, and we were impressed with the way the latter horse found again late. It was unsuitable ground for this gelding by Press Statement, and finding the 1200m comes at an ideal time in the preparation. Fiona Sandkuhl has won twice on this five-year-old in the past, and her 2kg claim gets Magnetic well in considering his rating. He holds a 50 percent strike rate on Good decks, so the conditions will likely to be in his favour. He’s drawn out in barrier 12 but should be able to cross and find the lead, so long as he gets to the rail in running, Magnetic will be hard to chase down.

In the closer, Arts Object looks like a very classy filly. The Kurt Goldman camp clearly has a big opinion of this girl and elected to race in a tricky assignment, running into Pavitra in this year’s Kembla Grange Classic on March 10. She wasn’t disgraced by any stretch, and we love the freshen coming back to the 1300m in BM58 company. Her tick-over trial between runs saw her go through the line in attractive fashion, and although she was beaten by 8.4 lengths last time out, it hasn’t dented her confidence moving forward. Barrier two should see her be no worse than mid-field turning for home, and even at the current quote with online bookmakers, Arts Object looks a great price.

Best Value: Hallowed Star
Hallowed Star is another galloper that will appreciate getting back on top of the ground, after his latest effort saw him on a Heavy track at Canberra on April 7. His best performances have been when stalking his rivals on Good ground, and he should see similar conditions to what he got when breaking his maiden at Dubbo on March 3. He powered to the line to score and subsequently ran well again before finding the bottomless track at Canberra. If you ignore his latest effort, he shouldn’t be at double-figure odds in this field. This son of Hallowed Crown looks progressive, and with conditions finally becoming ideal, he looks a great value play.
