While the Warrnambool May Carnival comes to a close on Thursday, the Wagga Gold Cup Carnival will be kicking off with the Wagga Town Plate on Thursday. Eight races will be run and won on a track that is rated a Good 4, and the rail will be in the true position for the entire circumference of the course. Wagga Town Plate Tip: Marway
Former Rockhampton sprinter Marway has made his presence felt since moving to Mark Newnham’s stable in Sydney, having already set a course record over the 1150m Kensington course three starts back. On ANZAC Day he scorched the turf to defeat Count De Rupee over 1250m, which looks good form for this. He has drawn wide in barrier 11, but he has tremendous gate speed and so will jump and run to find the front. Tom Sherry has a 24% strike rate aboard Newnham’s runners, so we expect Marway to add to that tally in Thursday’s feature. He drops 6kg off his last-start victory too, which is a very big advantage for a horse who is used to carrying weight.
Outside of Marway, we think Mount Horeb will improve running in the clockwise direction on a track that he has run well at in the past. Barrier 20 is putrid, but the $51 is overs.

Best Bet of the Day: Go Troppo
We found Go Troppo as a special in his last run when he won well at Goulburn, so we are going to go back to the well in this Class 1. David Pfeiffer’s gelding has only missed the places once in his five-start career, which includes his most recent 0.66-length victory in maiden company. Rory Hutchings partnered him in his last two, and while we rate Hutchings, Nash Rawiller is a definite upgrade in the riding ranks. Drawn well in barrier six, Rawiller will have this Hinchinbrook gelding in the first half of the field en route to another win over the mile.

Best Value of the Day: Pontmain
Pontmain has an unusual racing record for a seven-year-old, with just the two starts under his belt. The son of La Havre debuted back in January of 2019, which saw him win at this track, before running second in a Class 3 Highway race three weeks later. Trained by Tim Donnelly, the gelding hasn’t raced since, but he’s had a trial against open company horses where he ran a credible third. The 1400m first-up looks suitable for a galloper who is going to improve over further, but given he has won first-up at this course in the past, we are happy to be with him here in his racetrack return.
