W.A. Day Cup Best Bet – Success Play

Monday’s feature is only a $40,000 Class 5, so there are no superstars going around, but hopefully we can find the winner. Chris and his father Neville combine with Success Play who is unbeaten at Northam. The three-year-old son of Playing God has only won two of his 14 starts, placing on three other occasions. Having been racing well this time in at Ascot and Belmont, this gelding should be well suited back to this company, albeit up in grade. He will be in a forward spot from barrier four and should be going close to winning the Cup.

Best Bet at Northam – Salacia Queen

After showing a little bit of promise in her first three starts without winning, Salacia Queen put it all together in her first-up run at Albany on May 15, coming from a long way back to win in maiden company. The three-year-old filly by Maschino keeps gun hoop Clint Johnston-Porter in the saddle which is a big advantage, while Adam Durrant’s runners have been flying of late, with 10 winners from his past 50 starters. She will get back again from barrier eight, but she can be winning again.

Next Best at Northam – Airlie Queen

Grant Williams is one of the more in-form trainers in Western Australia, striking at almost 18% in the WA metro area since going out on his own. In race seven, he and Patrick Carbery combine with last-start winner Airlie Queen. The four-year-old mare has had three starts at Northam for two wins and a third which will bode well, while she comes in with winning form following a Class 3 victory at Belmont last start. The mare by Artie Schiller will settle down midfield from barrier seven, and she should go close to winning again.
