The Listed VRC St Leger is the featured event on the eight-race card at Flemington on ANZAC Day this weekend. The 2800m event has attracted 10 of the best three-year-old stayers still in training, with Through Irish Eyes the $2.80 favourite with online bookmakers. HorseBetting.com.au brings you the top odds, best bets and our $100 betting strategy for the St Leger, which will serve as a strong form reference for the Andrew Ramsden Stakes in three weeks’ time. Tictoc Tictoc is the natural leader in the race and should have no issue in leading this field up from barrier one, with Prince Romany expected to sit outside the speed from the wide barrier.

Despite drawing the widest barrier (10), Prince Romany will take some holding out as his progression through the grades has shown he will only get better over further. His win in a BM64 at Bendigo on April 14 over 2200m had a touch of arrogance to it, and his strong finish through the line suggests the extra 600m here should not be a detriment to his chances. The Matt Cumani-trained son of Americain is bred to stay, and we are happy to have him at an each-way quote in his first go at 2800m. We expect Damian Lane to settle him outside the leader, but if he is afforded a touch of luck and can get cover in the run, he will prove even harder to hold out.

Through Irish Eyes chased home the smart Liqueuro in the Galilee Series Final when letting down from the back of the field off a long sustained run. He looked to have peaked in the concluding stages, suggesting the extra 400m here will benefit him, but from barrier two he could find himself in some trouble on the rail at a crucial time. Mark Zahra retains the ride, and if he can have him in the moving line from around the 800m, he can go through the gears at his own pace and have the last look at the leaders.

Salto Angel may still be winless after 10 starts, but there is arguably no classier maiden in the country. She was beaten just over a length in the VRC Oaks at 2500m here in the spring and has since chased home a couple of handy runners. From barrier nine, we expect her to settle close to the speed, and if she can get some cover early on, it could be 11th time lucky for the Sacred Falls filly.
