Volkoff ready to win at 1200m

Bryan Guy is hoping Volkoff can deliver on the Sunshine Coast.

Trainer Bryan Guy believes a strong finishing first-up run indicates former Perth mare Volkoff can break her duck at 1200 metres at the Sunshine Coast.

Volkoff has won 10 races in Perth but none beyond 1100m.

The seven-year-old mare has been stakes placed at 1200m but has failed to win in six tries at the distance.

Volkoff went through the Magic Millions National Sale but when she failed to reach an expected price she was sent to Gold Coast-based Guy to continue racing.

At her first start for Guy and his training partner and son Daniel Guy, Volkoff finished fifth to Dal Cielo over 1200m in an open handicap at the Gold Coast.

The run was good enough for Guy to suggest the mare raced on and head to the Bloomhill Cancer Care Handicap at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

“She ran into trouble at the top of the straight at the Gold Coast and I liked the way she got home,” Guy said.

“It showed she still had something to give.”

The Guys will also have promising mare Nashville Skyline in the Bloomhill Volunteers Plate (1600m).

“The only thing that surprised us about her last win was her starting price ($10),” Guy said.

“She is ready to run a big race and I think she can go on to better things.”
