Victoria Derby – what the jockeys said

VICTORIA DERBY JOCKEY COMMENTS

Tye Angland (Ace High) 1st : “It’s obviously a big thrill but I was thinking I was in trouble about the 1000 metres. When they took off they just fired my horse up and I couldn’t hold him in behind them anymore. I just had to count, just wait, to let him roll into it, just try to hold onto him as long as I can to get the trip, but (the way) he’s pulled up, he could do it again.”

Hugh Bowman (Sully) 2nd : “Very pleased with his effort. No excuses, the winner was too good today but I can see my horse really improving come the autumn.”

Damian Lane (Astoria) 3rd : “He ran super. When I pulled him out, I thought I was the winner but the winner was too strong.”

Noel Callow (Pissaro) 4th : “He ran really well. It was a bit sticky at the start but he got into a position on the fence and I just got the suck run the whole time. He ran super, just got a little bit tight on the line but he ran really well. If he’d had every possible chance, he probably would have run third.”

Michael Walker (Main Stage) 5th : “Super run. I thought I was the winner at the top of the straight. Got within two lengths of the eventual winner and then just petered out.”

Ben Melham (Aberro) 6th : “He went about as good as he can go. The tempo was no good to anyone.”

Jye McNeil (Wolfe Tone) 7th : “He got back, obviously they didn’t run along that well out in front .. he finished the race off well for a maiden.”

Mark Zahra (Weather With You) 8th : “He was just too keen in parts with the blinkers. Going forward, take them off.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Eshtiraak) 9th : “I got on to the back of the winner (Ace High) then just levelled out the last furlong.”

Luke Nolen (Ocean’s Fourteen) 10th : “He presented into the race but he didn’t stay it out. I think he’ll run a mile and a half next prep. It was a courageous effort.”

Blake Shinn (Tangled) 11th : “He just raced too fiercely from the get-go. I tried to get him to settle midrace but he just overdid it. He’s more of a 2000-metre horse.”

John Allen (Rockarral) 12th : “He ran OK. When he grows up a bit mentally, as well as physically, he might be a nice horse.”

Jordan Childs (Greycliffe) 13th : “He ran well. I just had to do a little bit of work early but then we got into a nice spot. At the top of the straight we peeled out and he probably just lacked a turn of foot. He needs a spell.”

Beau Mertens (Nothing Too Hard) 14th : “I was happy with the run. We just wanted to get back and finish off and he stayed on to the line pretty well.”

Craig Williams (Justice Faith) 15th : “At the top of the straight I had a horse that was travelling well, didn’t spend any petrol, but the moment I put him under pressure, he completely didn’t stay against these horses today.”

Stephen Baster (Johnny Vinko) Last : “He ran OK, just needs time to develop and he’ll come back a nice horse..”
