Underwood Stakes 2020 betting tips & best odds

Russian Camelot
Russian Camelot is well backed for Saturday’s Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Just the one Group 1 race will be run and won at Caulfield on Saturday as 10 runners face the starter for the Underwood Stakes over 1800m. Russian Camelot is the even-money favourite, while there won’t be a great deal of speed in the race outside of Trap For Fools and Gailo Chop.

Best BetRussian Camelot Get the best odds

Russian Camelot looks like one of the biggest put-in, take-out jobs in Australia on Saturday. The South Australian Derby winner returned in superb fashion a fortnight ago when second in the Makybe Diva Stakes, where he was four wide throughout the trip but attacked the line well. He drops 1kg here to the minimum weight of 56.5kg and should be far too good. We have him settling midfield from barrier nine under Damien Oliver and rattling home over horses that are well and truly past their best. This horse is the favourite for everything he has been nominated in, and rightly so. Danny O’Brien is the master when it comes to producing staying types, so we expect to see this horse come out and do what he has to do now that he gets out over a little bit further.

Next BestArcadia Queen Get the best odds

Arcadia Queen ran Pretty Brazen to half a length two weeks ago, and that horse franked the form by running third in the Sir Rupert Clarke last weekend, so we expect the Williams stable’s five-year-old mare to run into the minor money here. It is the first time she steps up to 1800m since her demolition job in the Kingston Town Stakes in Perth 15 months ago. Drawn the inside alley, she will box seat under William Pike and chime in late with even luck. She gives Russian Camelot 0.5kg, so we can’t see her beating him, but the weight relief from her last start and rise in distance will suit.

Best ValueSo Si Bon Get the best odds

So Si Bon has promised the world but failed to deliver on multiple occasions, but he has gotten better with age and looks to be the forgotten runner in the race. The enigmatic gelding flew home last start to run third behind Fierce Impact and Russian Camelot, which is the form we want to follow here. At around $26, he looks a spectacular each-way play for those who don’t want to take the shorts about Russian Camelot. From barrier eight, he will settle towards the tail of the field and follow the favourite into the race under Daniel Stackhouse. Three of his five career wins have come at Caulfield, so we expect to see him run well here.
