Ascot Racecourse will play host to a nine-race card this Melbourne Cup Day, with the highlight event being the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with warm weather and no rain on the forecast, we expect to be racing on a perfect Good 4 surface all day. The rail will be in the +10m position for the entire circuit, with the opening race set to jump at 11:28am AWST.
Burgess Queen Stakes Tip: Super Smink
Daniel Morton’s star filly Super Smink returned with a very impressive victory in the Listed Belgravia Stakes at this track over 1200m on October 28, where she made up a stack of ground to run over the top of her rivals late. This three-year-old filly won the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate and Group 3 W.A Sires’ Produce Stakes last preparation and she has won four of her first six starts. This daughter of Super One clearly has bigger fish to fry later in her preparation, but we expect her to claim the Burgess Queen Stakes second-up on Tuesday.

Best Bet at Ascot: Mocha Dream
Adam Durrant and Clint Johnston-Porter will combine once again with Mocha Dream, seeking to record back-to-back victories after scoring a nice win last start at Geraldton over 1100m on October 27. After settling midfield at his most recent run, this four-year-old gelding had to push through a small gap to get clear before letting down with a blistering turn of foot to nab the leader in the final strides. This son of Dream Ahead will step up 100m in distance to 1200m, and we expect that to be a positive for him. Johnston-Porter should be able to settle in the one-one position behind the leaders, and if he gets even luck, Mocha Dream will prove extremely hard to beat.

Next Best at Ascot: Processio
The Grant & Alana Williams-trained Processio ran an eye-catcher on her debut at Bunbury, where she was held up for most of the home straight and only got clear in the final 100m. This three-year-old filly let down with an electric turn of foot to get within half a length of the leading duo, but after being held up for so long, she never really got a fair chance. William Pike choosing to stick with this daughter of Sessions is a positive sign, and the extra 400m looks like a huge jump in distance, but she will receive the run of the race from barrier one. If Processio gets an ounce of luck in the final 300m, she will get every chance to break her maiden at the second time of asking.
