HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie selections for Thursday’s eight-race card at Townsville. The track is rated a Soft 5 and the rail is in the true position for the entire course, while the first race is due to jump at 12:25pm local time.
Best Bet: Buster Block
Peter Cullen will ride his seven-year-old gelding Buster Block in a 1400m Open Handicap on Thursday, and the pair should be competitive. The son of Reset resumed with a half-length defeat at this track over the 1000m distance, which would no doubt have been too sharp for him. The consistent galloper does his best racing at Townsville and gets better the deeper he goes into his campaign, so second-up and rising to 1400m should be perfect. This is an easier race, and while he does go up 3.5kg in the weights, he gets a perfect barrier (3) and should have every chance to win this.
Race 6 – Buster Block (#3)Next Best: Magnate
Magnate is one runner we have dubbed a non-winner, with 15 starts for only six minor placings, but the four-year-old has never faced an easier race than this. Previously with Stuart Kendrick on the Sunshine Coast, this son of Written Tycoon has only had two runs with Adrian Coome for a second at Rockhampton before beating one runner home in his final run last prep. He has now had five months off the scene and resumes in a 1200m maiden, and he gets barrier five with Les Tilley on board. Magnate can stalk the leaders and break through in this.
Race 1 – Magnate (#1)Next Best Again: Cochrane
The market got it spot on with this enigmatic two-year-old when first-up at Mackay, with Cochrane drifting from even money out to nearly $4 prior to the jump. While he worked home strongly from the back, the son of Spirit Of Boom could only manage fourth. His next start he was ridden strangely when fifth over 1100m, and he now drops back to the more suitable 1000m distance at a track which should suit him more. Drawn well in barrier three and now third-up under Ryan Wiggins, this gelding can get his maiden out of the way on Thursday.
