Moonee Valley Torney Night Cup Betting Preview – 12/02/21

The Listed Torney Night Cup is the featured event on Moonee Valley’s eight-race card on Friday night, with a field of eight assembled to compete for $150,000. The race over 2500m was taken out by Dabiyr in 2020, and the 2021 edition will be the 10th time the race has been run and won. The Torney Night Cup will jump at 8pm AEDT.

Mosh Music from the Archie Alexander stable appreciated the step up to 2400m last time at Sandown on January 23 when charging home late. The mare held out the eventual Hobart Cup winner Double You Tee when the two made a couple of well-timed runs off the back of a hot pace, so she looks the obvious top selection. She should get a similar tempo in this, so look for her to do her best work late en route to a fourth win at Moonee Valley from six starts. Under the familiar guidance of Jordan Childs, she will relish the step up to 2500m with an eye on the Sydney Cup.

Anthony Freedman and Jamie Kah will be hoping for a complete repeat performance of Starcaster’s last-start win over this track and distance on January 22. Having been poor in the lead up to that run, the six-year-old gelding got off the canvas to win in impressive fashion. He was headed at the top of the straight but kicked back gamely to do his best through the line, getting home by over a length. He maps to take a sit just off the leader’s heels from barrier two, and if given the chance at the top of the straight, he should be fighting out the finish.

The Peter Moody-trained Stars Of Carrum has not won since Cox Plate Day 2019 in the Moonee Valley Vase, but he is never far from the finish. He was the one who set the genuine tempo for Mosh Music to finish over the top at Sandown, and to only go down by a length that day suggests he should be right in this. If afforded a quiet time of it up front, he could set another genuine tempo but still have a bit to give now that he comes here fourth up. With a slight drop in weight and returning to The Valley, the place of his last win, he could spring a surprise.
