Top Me Up causes Flemington boilover, beating Moreira favourite

Top me Up
THE main two elects in the market have gone down in the first at Flemington as Top Me Up caused an upset to salute at $11.40.

Short-priced favourite Cannyescent looked imposing coming into the straight, but failed to find a kick in the final stages of the race while second elect Dusty Jack was kept three wide for a lot of the journey and failed to make an impression.

The failure for Dusty Jack was the first time in five races the Hayes and Daberning runner has finished outside the quinella placings in five races.

King’s Command trailed the long-time leader Top Me Up and found a clear path to claim second and return $4.10 at WilliamHill.com.au.

Sadaqa stormed home to round out the placings in a photo finish to hand punters $4 at Sportsbet.com.au.

The trio of double figure runners combined to return a $1,324 trifecta at Crownbet.com.au.

Cannyescent loomed up in the final 400m of the race, but failed to kick on in the latter stages and finished a disappointing fifth.

Cannyescent’s jockey Joao Moreira said the horse failed to hit the line after looking ominous in the straight.

“I thought given the chance he was given he’d be able to finish off,” Moreira told HorseBetting.com.au at the track following the run.

The champion hoop said he needed to change his tactics after hitting traffic around the corner.

“How it panned out though I had a horse right in front of his face which forced me to pull out a little bit early, but in the last 300m he got past the second horse, but in the last 150m he was empty.”

Moreira believes Cannyescent would benefit from a more controlled run in the early stages of the race.

“He seems like a horse that needs to be ridden a little bit more quiet, and I think his run was just a fair one.”
