Toowoomba racing preview – January 30, 2021
Toowoomba night racing is back this weekend with seven races out of Clifford Park. The track is a Good 4 and the rail is in the true position for the entire course. Race 1 is set to jump at 5:19pm local time, with the last at 8:52pm.
Best Bet: Race 3 – Kirra Lass
Lindsay Hatch and Wendy Peel combine in the third with last-start Lismore winner Kirra Lass. The locally trained three-year-old filly led all the way on that occasion over the 1110m journey and held on for a 0.9-length victory at Class 1 level. Prior to that she placed twice at Ipswich over the 800m short course, so we are tipping it was a bit sharp for her. Back slightly to the 1000m will suit, as will the inside alley and 3kg claim. This should be an easy watch.

Next Best: Race 5 – Five Oxford
Five Oxford does have to give the rest of these at least 3.5kg, but we think he can do it. The sole male in the race comes off a win at Gatton last time out in a Benchmark 65 when sent around as an even-money favourite. Prior to that he was in the money at the Sunshine Coast behind Zingalong, and then behind some nice ones like Boom Spender and Iolite. Kyle Wilson-Taylor is arguably the best apprentice in Queensland at the moment, so his booking is very positive. The outside alley will see Five Oxford come over with stablemate Short Sara, and he should be too good for them here.

Best Value: Race 7 – I’m Calling Dibs
It wouldn’t be a Toowoomba meeting without a Mark Currie winner, and we are confident that his runner in the last can give a good sight at each-way odds. The four-year-old gelding has raced on Heavy tracks at his last two and hasn’t gone an inch in either, so we are happy to put a pen through them and focus on his run before that at this track on a Good 4. He won that with a leg in the air by nearly four lengths over the 1650m, so the added 200m here should be ideal. Drawn in the inside alley under Ryan Plumb, he will be handy to the speed and should be too good for them.
