A BRILLIANT front-running ride by Jay Ford has delivered a strong benchmark 83 win at Rosehill on Saturday for consistent performer The Pharoah.

The four-year-old took control of the race early and boxed in the second favourite The Peacock into the straight and the Godolphin runner was unable to build momentum quick enough to run down the long-time leader.

Hogmanay closed late to relegate The Peacock to third, but was unable to run down The Pharoah which saluted and returned +140 at Crownbet.com.au.

The Pharoah’s racing style suited the way the track played at Rosehill on Saturday, and the horse’s trainer Gerald Ryan said it all fell into place for the four-year-old.

“He looked good today, it looked to be his race,” Ryan said.

The trainer was full of praise for Jay Ford’s ride following the race.

“It looked like it was going to map out good for him and he lobbed there and he was very well rated by Jay.

“It was well deserved to Jay, he’s an underrated rider.”

Saturday was just the second win of The Pharoah’s career, but the winning ratio belies just how good the horse has been.

Only once in its six previous starts had The Pharoah failed to place, and Ryan said the form was sound coming into this race and if it can get a race to suit it is almost impossible to overcome.

“I think if this guy gets his own little chance in front he’ll be right.”
