The Championships gaining popularity with increase in acceptances
THE Championships are fast approaching this April and its popularity continues to increase with a record number of acceptances.
The race most affected is the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ which has attracted 107 first acceptances after gaining only 78 last year.
The Australian Oaks has increased by 24 per cent and the 10 group ones throughout The Championships has increased overall by nine per cent.
Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys believes The Championships are now well-established and the draw card of the high-profile runners boosts its profile.
“The Championships are now entering their fourth year and have firmly established themselves as the Grand Finals of Australian racing. The concept presents two of the best days of racing witnessed anywhere in the world carrying over $20 million in prizemoney,” Mr V’landys said.
“The quality of horses this year will be outstanding including Sydney’s own superstar Winx as well as English trainer Charles Appleby’s Godolphin horses.”
Major races The Doncaster Handicap and The Queen Elizabeth Stakes have also gathered good numbers with The Doncaster gained 81 first acceptances after getting 75 last year.
“This nine-per cent rise in first acceptances underlines the great strength of Sydney racing and the stature The Championships already holds,” Australian Turf Club CEO Darren Pearce said.
“We are looking forward to showcasing so many world-class horses, jockeys and trainers at Royal Randwick.”
