The best is yet to come for Sweettalkingwilly after Maiden win

Sweettalkingwilly feels the love after breaking through for its first win at Wagga for Trevor Sutherland.

PROMISING gelding Sweettalkingwilly finally broke through for its maiden win at start 10 on Monday, and trainer Trevor Sutherland believes it is only just the beginning for the two-year-old.

The Poet’s Voice progeny was the $2.30 favourite at WilliamHill.com.au in the opening race at Wagga, but did not get everything its own way, edging out Denver ($1.70 at Sportsbet.com.au) in a photo-finish to record its first-ever win.

Little Naïve rounded out the placings and returned $1.70 at Crownbet.com.au.

Sutherland said that the horse lacks a true turn of foot to truly hammer a field, but would be a soft/heavy track specialist if it ever got the surface to suit.

“He’s a little bit one-paced, but if we ever get this horse on a wet track they won’t touch him,” Sutherland said.

The trainer said they have planned to spell the horse but the form is too consistent to justify taking the gelding away from the track.

“We keep going to put him out, but he keeps doing well.

“I reckon there was one (win) in him, but the horse has paid for himself now so everything else is a bonus.”

The trainer said the horse is one of the more honest gallopers in his stable, but is still expecting bigger and better things in the coming years.

Sutherland said we should see an even better horse this time next year.

“The horse has done a great job… and he’s going to be a lot better horse as a three-year-old,” the trainer said.

“He’s never baulked a run as a two-year-old, he’s just a horse that’s really done well in himself and is very happy in the camp so we’ve just been ticking him through.
