The 2023 edition of the Group 2 Japan Trophy is the headline act for the eight-race program out of Tauranga this Saturday. On paper, we’ve got an even field of 11 runners assembled for this year’s contest over the 1600m. The track is rated a Heavy 8, with the rail out 3m from 1000m to 400m, with the remainder in the true position. Racing is set to commence at 12:30pm NZDT.
Japan Trophy Top Tip – Gino Severini
Gino Severini had been out of form before coming home well last start to finish third after having to race wide into the turn. Joe Doyle, who rode him in that last run for the first time, is back in the saddle. Gino Severini won this race last year and, although a nine-year-old now, gets the track conditions to suit. He has had just two previous starts at this track, which resulted in a win and a placing. From barrier three, Doyle should be able to slot him into a nice trailing position and look to take the lead with 200m to run.

Best Bet at Tauranga – Violetta
Violetta is having her fourth run back from a spell and will be at peak fitness. She was only a long neck back from the winner when finishing fourth last start and has won her only previous start at this track. The wide draw by that time of the day won’t be an issue and she will be finishing all over the top of her rivals down the home straight.

Best Value at Tauranga – Neighbourhood
Neighbourhood had a tough run when finishing fifth over 1400m last start on a heavy track at Matamata, which followed a game win there over the same distance. He will appreciate the extra furlong on offer this weekend. The O’Sullivan & Scott team is flying at present, and with Joe Doyle in the saddle this guy will prove hard to beat.
