Tamworth Jockey Club is scheduled to host an eight-race card for the relocated Armidale Cup meeting and Horsebetting NSW form analyst presents his best bets, top odds and quaddie numbers. The track is rated a Soft 5, with the rail out 2.5m the entire circuit, for the meeting commencing at 1:10pm AEDT.

Armidale Cup Top Tip: Beckford

The Armidale Cup over 1600m is the feature event at Tamworth on Sunday and we are siding with the Troy O’Neile-trained Beckford. Having won two of his three starts this campaign, the four-year-old son of Not a Single Doubt comes to the Armidale Cup on the back of a hard-fought win. Having been settled in the second half of the field and needing a lot of luck, Beckford looked to be a hard luck story approaching the home turn having been held up for a run. He eventually found clear air in the final 100m and was too good for his rivals late on. He stays at the Tamworth 1600m where he is undefeated from two starts and with three wins and a minor placing from five starts at the mile, he presents great value at $6. Mikayla Weir will need a touch of luck from barrier 14, but considering he will look to get back and run on, the tricky barrier should be no issue and we expect Beckford to continue on his winning ways.

Tamworth Best Bet: So Country

Our best bet of the day comes up in the opening event when the Melanie O’Gorman-trained So Country steps out over 1000m. Having begun his career, with consecutive runner-up efforts and the four-year-old Shamexpress entire looks perfectly placed to bring up a maiden victory at start three. Both starts have been over the Armidale 1100m, so the step back to the 1000m third-up in his career should be ideal. Having settled up on speed in both runs, the fact he has drawn barrier 11should not impact his chances as Ashley Morgan will look to have So Country settled close to the speed. He looks to be the only natural leader in the race and if he gets a quiet time of it out in front, he should prove too speedy for this lot.

Tamworth Value Bet: Ballast

The Melissa Dennett-trained Ballast returns from a nine-week spell and looks well placed to bring up a maiden first-up win. With four minor placings from 10 first-up runs, he has not always necessarily been reliable first-up but considering last time in he finished second at his first run of a spell, he may just be getting better with age. The nine-year-old son of Hard Spun strung together three straight wins and considering he has three wins and four minor placings from 12 starts at 1400m, he should take some beating here. From barrier two, with speed drawn outside, we expect Jackson Searle will look to have him settle on the leaders back and when the moment comes, we anticipate Ballast will swoop on some vulnerable leaders and go home better than the rest.
