Talindert Stakes betting preview – Saturday, February 13

The Listed Talindert Stakes for two-year-olds is one of the featured events on the nine-race Flemington card this Saturday. Almost half of the runners in the field of 12 are on debut, and it’s no surprise to see the market favouring those with race experience. Ingratiating and Gulf Suez shared favouritism in early online betting markets, but the former has since shortened into $3.10 to take the top line outright.

The 2020 Talindert Stakes winner was Ole Kirk, and if he is any indication, the 2021 winner is set for a big year ahead. The pace in the race will come from Gulf Of Suez and Spicy, with the likes of Frost Flowers and Ingratiating settling just behind them off the speed.

Speaking of Ingratiating, the Godolphin colt returns to the track where he won the Listed Maribyrnong Trial on debut when beating home General Beau, the winner of the Blue Diamond Preview and Prelude, before running into the handy Finance Tycoon in the Maribyrnong Plate on Melbourne Cup Day. He returned in the Champions Stakes when running into Enthaar and was beaten by 2.5 lengths. That form looks to be the one to follow, as he could not go with the star filly’s turn of foot yet still put enough of a gap on the remainder of his rivals. His experience down the Flemington straight suggests he will be hard to beat, and we should see him savaging the line late with Damien Oliver staying on board.

The obvious danger comes from Gulf Of Suez, who looks to be the leader in the Talindert Stakes and will be hard to catch on the back of his run in the Blue Diamond Preview on January 26. He raced wide throughout in that run and will appreciate getting to Flemington for the first time and having the chance to gallop out in free space. His two wins across the border in South Australia suggest he is a classy galloper already, and with a quiet time out in front he could prove hard to catch under Mark Zahra. If he handles the Flemington straight, it will take a good horse to beat him.

Outside of the top two selections, Frost Flowers and Saasmit are the dangers from the raced brigade following impressive runs in the Blue Diamond Preview. Saasmit is a $27 chance despite finishing only a length and a half behind Frost Flowers, who is rated a $5 chance. Saasmit did pull up lame following the Blue Diamond Preview, but who is to say he cannot run a cheeky race here at a big each-way price?
