Talented duo putting the spring in McKee’s step

Hasahalo
Hasahalo is one of two Stephen McKee horses with a lot of promise and group potential this spring.

PRECOCIOUS pair Hasahalo and Star Treasure are staking their claims for a big spring campaign for trainer Stephen McKee.

McKee said the pair have returned in great order after a spell.

“They are both back in work and doing very well,” the Ardmore trainer said.

Hasahalo won the Group Three Eclipse Stakes before finishing second behind Melody Belle in the Listed Karaka Million.

The Savabeel filly then ran fifth in the Group One Sistema Stakes and was turned out after a disappointing showing in the Group One Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes where it did not place.

McKee said Hasahalo looks to have improved physically following its spell.

“She’s filled out quite a bit and she looks really good,” the trainer said.

“A break has done wonders for her and we’re really looking forward to the future with her.”

McKee believes The Group Three Hawke’s Bay Breeders’ Gold Trail Stakes on September 23 looms as the race the three-year-old filly will target.

“We’ll just wait and see how she does and whether she has a race before then,” McKee said.

The filly’s stablemate Star Treasure will make a much earlier return to the track.

The horse’s trainer believes the colt could be racing within two months following its lengthy spell.

“He’s quite a leggy horse and he’s done well,” McKee said.

“We’ll probably be looking to race him in late August, maybe at Ruakaka, and hopefully the 2000 Guineas later on.”

Star Treasure has won one of his six starts and finished runner-up in the Group One Sistema Stakes and fourth in the Group One Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.
