Sydney raider Wollombi takes out The Vanity
Champion jockey Damien Oliver managed to take out his third edition of The Vanity when claiming the 2023 edition aboard the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly Wollombi.
She was able to make the impressive leap from benchmark company in Sydney and make her way down south of the boarder to produce a career best in the Group 3 for the three-year-old fillies.
It was a patient ride from Oliver as he let a hectic speed unfold in front of him with Proscenium Arch kicking up to lead.
Jamie Kah loomed up on the outside of the leader momentarily looked the winner, before Wollombi and See You In Heaven made their runs from back in the field.
The filly out of Extreme Choice rounded up her rivals nicely to score by a half-length and stopping the clock under 1:22:00.
It was a dominant win from a horse the market didn’t want to be with around the $12 with online bookmakers; however, she didn’t what price she was at, as she put them away with relative ease on the winning post.
2023 Group 3 The Vanity Replay – Wollombi
Peter and Paul Snowden weren’t at Flemington, but stable representative Quinton Cassidy spoke post-race and was delighted with the effort of this progressive three-year-old.
“She’s come down in great order,” said Cassidy.
“It makes my job easy down her to tick her over, present her and get the cash.
“She’s been racing well all prep and she’s on the up. I knew she’d get down here, she’d relax. She’s a really easy filly to deal with. She makes the job easy.”
When asked where to next for Wollombi, Cassidy joked.
“They’re masters of it mate and I’ll leave it up to them.”
Jockey Damien Oliver spoke post-race about sitting on the back of Wollombi and he was happy with the result she produced.
“It was my first sit on her, but she’s been winning well in Sydney,” said Oliver
“Winning form is good form and I really like the way she’d really been attacking the line up there. A little bit of a jump in class today, but there was a nice pace in the race – I just let her be happy and she joined in great in the straight.”
When talking where to next for Wollombi, he echoed the sentiments of Cassidy, although the Kewney over the mile might be the option.
“The Snowden’s are very good trainers, so I wouldn’t like to tell them what to do too much, they know what they’re doing.”
