HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the Sunshine Coast Cup meeting this Saturday, including a tip in the Listed feature. The track is rated a Soft 5 at the time of writing, while the rail is back into the true position for the entire course. The first race is set to jump at 12:08pm AEST.
Listed Sunshine Coast Cup – Desert Lord
In Saturday’s feature, David Vandyke and Ryan Maloney combine with talented sprinter Desert Lord. The lightly raced seven-year-old gelding finished third in the Glasshouse Handicap at this track and trip during the winter before going on to win the Goldmarket Handicap and then run second in the Weetwood Handicap behind Apache Chase. Desert Lord has trialled twice since his last run, and given his trainer’s astuteness, we are confident backing him first-up over 1400m. In a race with little to no speed, Maloney can find a prominent position from barrier 12 which will allow him to sprint quickly on the big track. This one looks ready to win fresh.
Best Bet – Weona Smartone
David Vandyke’s classy galloper Weona Smartone is shooting for nine consecutive wins in what is the toughest field he has faced yet. In saying that, in his past five starts his biggest starting price was $1.65, so the $2.10 that is currently on offer is a gift, especially if you ask the SP profilers. Coming off a narrow win at the Gold Coast on December 4, the son of Shamexpress has been back to the trials and romped in at this track by seven lengths, so he looks to be back to his best. Having been carefully placed all throughout his career, this five-year-old is lining up in just his 10th race start, but what he lacks in experience, he makes up for in sheer speed and ability. Drawn in barrier two under Ryan Maloney, this gelding should be able to find the front, control the speed and prove too good over the 1000m on his home deck.
Next Best Bet – Garoppolo
Maryann Brosnan and Jaden Lloyd combine in the second race with the classy Garoppolo. This four-year-old son of Per Incanto has won three of his eight career starts, including a win at this track and a victory over Kingston’s Here at Eagle Farm back in June. In the gelding’s two runs back this preparation, he finished off very well behind Garibaldi over 1200m on December 11 before charging late in Class 3 company on Boxing Day when 3.5 lengths behind Mass Destruction and Boomnova. Now third-up and out to 1400m for the first time, Garoppolo looks very well placed to return to the winner’s stall and keep his unbeaten record at the Sunshine Coast. Barrier two could prove a little sticky, although he is naturally a backmarker, so he will likely get back towards the rear and run home strongly on the big track. After Lloyd’s 2kg claim, he looks better than these.
Best Value Bet – Not Another
The local trainers often cause an upset on their big days, especially at the Sunshine Coast, so we can make a definite case for Stuart Kendrick’s filly Not Another. The three-year-old lines up in a competitive, albeit fairly weak, 3YO Handicap over 1000m. The daughter of Headwater won her maiden at this track in all-the-way fashion on December 12 before contesting an open three-year-old race at this track over 1300m. Kendrick then opted to send Not Another into the deep end at her most recent start, and although she didn’t threaten the dominant winner, Starman, she ran gamely to finish fourth. Back to 1000m is going to suit this girl, while barrier six should give Leah Kilner a great chance to find the front and control the race. The online bookies are paying a big price for Not Another, and we are happy to take it on.
