HorseBetting’s Queensland form analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for Sunshine Coast’s nine-race program on Caloundra Cup Day, including top tips in all three feature races. The track is rated a Heavy 8 with more rain predicted on Friday and on race morning, so a downgrade could be on the cards. The rail will be in the true position for the entire course, while the first race is scheduled to go at 12:53pm AEST.
Winx Guineas Tip: Our Playboy
Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr had a solid Brisbane Winter Carnival with Ayrton winning on Stradbroke Handicap Day, and while Our Playboy hasn’t quite left his mark, there is still time with one more run here in the Winx Guineas. The son of Sebring has only won three races, all of which came on rain-affected surfaces, including the Group 3 Vain Stakes at Caulfield on August 15 over 1100m. The gelding is yet to race over 1600m in 13 starts, but after being three wide without cover all throughout his most recent start at Ipswich over 1350m, he should be able to see out the trip. The wet conditions will be to his liking, especially given that the last time he saw a wet track was the last time he was in the winner’s stall. Barrier seven is ideal, and Robbie Fradd rides well at this track with a 17% strike rate. Our Playboy will settle just off the pace and be finishing strongly with plenty of galloping room on the big track.

Caloundra Cup Tip: Flash Aah
Flash Aah is one galloper who any racehorse owner would love to own. The five-year-old gelding has recorded wins over as short as 1000m and as long as 1800m in his 15-start career and comes off an unlucky third in the Ipswich Cup over 2150m a fortnight ago. The Mitchell Fry-trained gelding has won six of his 15 races, and he could have added to that tally with a bit more luck last time out, so we are happy to side with him on a track that he has won on before. The son of Lucas Cranach is bred to stay, so the 2400m will be of no concern, and he is also a two-time winner on heavy tracks. Madeleine Wishart has had five rides aboard the consistent galloper for two wins and a third, and from barrier six she is going to get every chance to add another win aboard the gelding. We have plenty of respect for the race favourite, Stockman, but he is too short in our book.

Glasshouse Handicap Tip: Scallopini
One runner who we have always had a soft spot for is Steve O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted’s Scallopini. The six-year-old gelding has won nine of his 28 career starts, including two at this track and three on soft tracks, so he should get conditions to suit. The son of Snitzel was only fair first-up at Eagle Farm in the Moreton Cup at Group 2 level when seven lengths behind Baller on a Good 4, but now back to Listed level, out to his favoured 1400m distance and in a race with plenty of speed, he will be able to come flashing home over the top of them late. Jag Guthman-Chester has ridden the gelding once before for a third at this track and distance almost three years ago, so if he can jog his memory and produce a similar steer, he will go close to winning the feature. Barrier two will see Scallopini out the back and finishing off the better. The $21 appeals.

Best Bet of the Day: Totally Charmed
We are hoping that the O’Dea & Hoysted stable have a good afternoon at Corbould Park with Scallopini in the Glasshouse Handicap and Totally Charmed earlier in the day. The six-year-old hasn’t been seen at the races since a terrific win on November 21st at this track over the 1200m but has been seen at the trials, where he has finished second both times. The son of I Am Invincible is a winner of three from five when first-up, he has won five from seven at the Sunshine Coast and is a three-time winner over 1000m at this track, so he looks perfectly placed. Stephanie Thornton has ridden the gelding twice and been victorious both times, with both of those wins coming in succession last November. Shooting for three straight wins, Totally Charmed and the in-form Thornton are going to get every chance from barrier six off the back of a hot speed.

Next Best at Sunshine Coast: Aleysa’s Dream
Rockhampton-based trainer Nick Walsh nearly tasted victory in the Battle of the Bush Final at Eagle Farm last weekend with Bollente, so he will be hoping this classy filly can go one better and give the young trainer his first metropolitan victory. A winner of seven from 16 and a runner-up on a further six occasions, Aleysa’s Dream comes off a very tough win at Rockhampton in Open company on June 1, defeating Gypsy Toff by half a length. The start prior, the daughter of Carrara was beaten in a narrow photo to Goldsborough, who she again meets here, albeit 3kg better off at the weights and with an extra run under her belt now. The wide draw in barrier 14 will see Bobby El-Issa take the three-year-old filly forward and make the rest of them chase. Aleysa’s Dream is all class and has speed to burn, which makes her a great bet.

Sunshine Coast Value Bet: Steinbrenner
Mark Currie will saddle up his already well-supported gelding Steinbrenner in the second race of the day – a 1400m Benchmark 75. The five-year-old son of Sun Ruler has won his two career starts at the Sunshine Coast and remains undefeated when Bobby El-Issa has been in the saddle, including his last two starts back in February. While Steinbrenner is yet to win first-up – or at 1400m, for that matter – the Toowoomba-based galloper has rarely been out of the placings and relishes wet conditions, with four wins and six placings from 13 runs on rain-affected tracks. Barrier five will see El-Issa settle the consistent galloper in the first half of the field with cover, setting it up to grind them down late.
