Sunshine Coast racing tips & best bets – Friday, 15 May 2020

Baccarat Bay horse racing news
Baccarat Baby will start as the favourite in Friday’s Wayne Wilson Handicap at the Sunshine Coast.

With the changes to Queensland’s Winter Racing Carnival due to COVID-19, we see two Listed Races head to the Sunshine Coast on Friday night. Full fields have been assembled for both the Chief De Beers Handicap (1000m) and the Wayne Wilson Handicap (1600m). The track is rated a Good 4, with the rail in the true position to ensure perfect racing under lights.

Chief De Beers Handicap betting tips

Fifteen horses will face the starter in what will be a seriously hot affair in the feature 1000m sprint. With speed from Tarzan, Emerald Kingdom, Spurcraft, Gin ‘n’ Bitters and Sugar Boom, the race looks to be set up for a back marker to finish strongly over the top. Rob Heathcote’s runner Emerald Kingdom is looking to make it a seventh picket in the fence and will start favourite here.

We are with David Van Dyke’s 4yo mare Hold The Line. Under Jake Bayliss on the minimum weight, she looks ready to fire first up and add to her imposing fresh form (4:3-1-0). She’s never missed a place on her home track and looks a great each-way chance here around the $18 mark. Drawn barrier 11, she should find a spot behind the hot tempo and utilise her turn of foot to put herself right in the finish as long as she doesn’t get run off her feet early over the 1000m.

Deserving favourite and clear second pick is Emerald Kingdom, but we fear the 5yo might find himself posted three or four deep from barrier 14. Andrew Mallyon will have to produce a top steer to overcome the bad barrier, but he does have the right horse underneath. First up could be a slight query at the 1000m also. With even luck, he is a great chance, but we are going to wait until his next start to be on.

Best bets for Wayne Wilson Handicap

Some of Queensland’s top milers go toe-to-toe in the Listed Wayne Wilson Handicap in what looks to be a good lead-up race for the Stradbroke Handicap (June 6) and the Eagle Farm Mile (June 13). Kubis looks to lead the 16-horse field with Sabkhat likely to cross over from the carpark draw.

Baccarat Baby is the current top elect at $5 in a very open affair and we think the 4yo mare is a great winning chance. Drawn in barrier eight, she can find a midfield spot under regular hoop Michael Hellyer. The swing in the weights over last-start victor Silvera looks to put Baccarat Baby in pole position here. She is two from two over the Sunshine Coast mile and we expect the Van Dyke mare to make it three from three.

The Blue Army top the weights with their honest 5yo gelding Gaulois. The son of Street Cry has won four of his seven runs at the mile and comes out of some tougher races in Sydney. Drawn to do no work from the inside barrier, Larry Cassidy can use the gate to hold a position midfield and be within striking distance at the business end.
