2021 Sunline Stakes betting tips – Friday, March 19

The Group 2 Sunline Stakes for the fillies and mares is the joint-feature on the Moonee Valley card this Friday night. Run over 1600m with $200,000 on the line, this year’s edition attracts a small but competitive field.

The Corstens-trained Mamzelle Tess won it last time when saluting at $21, and it looks like she will go around at a similar price as she looks to defend her title. The current favourite for the 2021 Sunline Stakes is Grand De Flora at $5 in a wide-open market.

Expect In Good Health to take up the running here, with Mamzelle Tess and Spanish Reef to settle just on the heels of the leader. The likes of Oceanex and Scarlet Dream are expected to settle at the rear of the field.

We are happy to be with the Mick Price-trained Quantum Mechanic, who comes into this off a runner-up performance in the Matron Stakes at Flemington on March 6. With only eight runners engaged, expect Michael Walker to settle the Deep Field mare in the one-one on the back of a genuine tempo. Having missed the money on just the one occasion when racing over the mile, you just know she will be fighting out the finish. This horse just never runs a bad race, so she is the one we want to be with as she returns to Moonee Valley for the first time in 18 months.

Since being under the care of Peter Moody, In Good Health has rarely put a foot wrong. Her last-start eighth in the Frances Tressady Stakes looks worse on paper than it actually was, as she was held up for the majority of the home straight and had no luck when she needed it. We expect the five-year-old mare to get a quiet time of it in front, and leaders are notoriously hard to catch at The Valley on a Good-rated track with the rail in the true position.

One of the outsiders in the small field, Spanish Reef was only two lengths off Rich Hips two runs back in the Mannerism Stakes at Caulfield. Despite not winning in close to a year and a half, the Lope De Vega mare is never far from the finish. With the in-form Luke Currie on board, she could spring a surprise.
