Summer Cup, St Leger & New Zeland Cup all on Bizzwinkle radar
He is keen to head south to Wellington with the son of Rip Van Winkle with a view to an autumn return in search of higher honours.
The lightly-raced Bizzwinkle has won his last two starts in fine style and the Summer Cup (2400m) at Trentham on Saturday week is likely to be the four-year-old’s next step along the way to a black type target.
“The 2400m will suit him, he’s a good stayer so maybe we’ll take him back to Trentham for the St Leger,” Old said.
“We could then bring him back next time around for a race like the New Zealand Cup.”
Bizzwinkle broke his maiden over ground at Matamata in May and his summer form has been exemplary.
He struck again in Rating 65 company over 2100m at Te Rapa in December and followed up that performance at the end of the month with his first trip away resulting in victory in the Stratford Cup (2000m).
“I’ve always liked him, but as a three-year-old he was just weak and immature,” Old said.
All three of Bizzwinkle’s wins to date have been front-running displays, but his trainer doesn’t believe the stayer to be a one trick pony.
“I think he’ll probably be best if he can sit just off in second or third,” Old said. “He’s a big, dour one-pacer who can run good times.”
