Suavito ready for 2000m in Australian Cup

width="800" Nigel Blackiston is confident the rise to 2000 metres will be perfect for Suavito.

Nigel Blackiston is confident the rise to 2000 metres will be perfect for Suavito when the mare chases another Group One victory in the Australian Cup.

A first-up winner of the C F Orr Stakes over 1400m, Suavito was kept at that distance for her second start this campaign in an attempt to win back-to-back Futurity Stakes.

She did her best work late, running third to Turn Me Loose, and Blackiston is looking forward to Saturday’s weight-for-age feature at Flemington.

“She’s had two tough runs at 1400 metres and I think she was looking for the mile the other day,” Blackiston said.

“I think with the work she’s done this week leading into Saturday, the 2000 metres is perfect for her.”

Suavito won the Matriarch Stakes against her own sex over 2000m at Flemington during the 2014 spring carnival and Blackiston said the five-year-old was bigger, stronger and more mature.

Godolphin’s Bow Creek is the Australian Cup favourite at $3.20 after producing an explosive finish to win the traditional lead-up, the Group Two Peter Young Stakes (1800m).

Our Ivanhowe is at $6 just ahead of Preferment ($7) and Australian Guineas winner Palentino who is in line to back up from his win on Saturday should he continue to please trainer Darren Weir this week while Suavito is a $9 chance.

“She’s coming out of two strong Group One races and strong form lines,” Blackiston said of Suavito.

“Obviously Bow Creek is definitely one of the main opponents but there’s others in this race.

“There’s never such thing as an easy Group One. I’ve got a healthy respect for all the competition, but I wouldn’t change her for any of them.”

Some of the other horses expected to contest the Australian Cup include Happy Trails, Mourinho, Rising Romance, Fenway, Almoonqith and last year’s runner-up Extra Zero.
