Stutt Stakes 2020 betting tips, odds & form

Flying Award
Flying Award is one of eight runners in the mix for Friday’s Group 2 Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley.

The Group 2 Stutt Stakes has attracted a ripping lineup of three-year-old colts and geldings. Despite a field of only eight runners, three of which are dual acceptors for the Caulfield Guineas Prelude on Saturday, it shapes to be a fantastic race to follow towards the Guineas, the Derby and even the Cox Plate. Holyfield is the current race favourite and looks to be the leader as well, while Flying Award, Glenfiddich and Cherry Tortoni all sit under $5.

Friday racing tips for 2020 Stutt Stakes

Best BetFlying Award Get the best odds

We are big fans of Danny O’Brien’s colt and were very impressed by his first-up performance when second behind Immortal Love in the McNeil Stakes. A month between runs and the step up to a mile looks to suit this horse, who is yet to miss the top two in his four career starts. Drawn low in barrier one, Damien Oliver is likely to settle two or three pairs back on the fence and peel the colt to the outside around the bend. He is the current equal favourite for the Caulfield Guineas and sits near the top of the market for the Cox Plate, so we would love to see him handle The Valley well here. The form out of his last start has been franked with a win by Crosshaven, a placing by Ranting, and a tough sixth by Tagaloa at Group 1 level against the older horses last weekend. This is Flying Award’s race to lose.

Next BestGlenfiddich Get the best odds

Glenfiddich ran a terrific third in the Memsie Stakes when just 2.25L behind Behemoth, who won another Group 1 on Saturday. He rises 6.5kg here but goes from a weight-for-age race back to set weights against his own age group. He is drawn to get a lovely run outside the leader from barrier three and move up boldly in the business end. He is yet to place when second up, which is some query, but up to a mile will be his go. In his only previous run over 1600m, he ran King’s Legacy to a quarter of a length in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes. It can be perfect or ugly with this horse, as he has run some stinkers in his 10-start career, but we think we will see the best of him now that Peter Moody is in charge.

Best ValueAlcyone Get the best odds

The outsider of the field is the current VRC Derby favourite, Alcyone. While we think the 1600m will be too sharp for him first up against some genuine milers, the $26 represents a great deal of value on an each-way basis. He flew home to just miss on debut before finishing midfield and then second in his next two respective races, both won by Cherry Tortoni. He then stepped up to 1800m and was far too strong for his rivals despite carrying 60kg. The Valley is unlikely to be his go, but we are happy to have something small about the place on this talented stayer.
