Recent Stocks Stakes results
- Alsephina ($3.60) became the second Western Australian winner of the Group 2 Stocks Stakes in as many years, following Amelia’s Jewel’s barnstorming finish to claim the race in 2023. Hailing from the Grant & Alana Williams stable, the six-year-old mare produced a strong performance at Flemington first-up, which had many tipping her in the final event on the Moonee Valley card. After jumping well from the barriers, Blake Shinn allowed the daughter of Star Turn to settle midfield behind the speed, while Grinzinger Belle ($3.50) and Jennilala ($4.80) set a good speed ahead of her. Alsephina was one of the only runners that wasn’t off the bit as the field rounded the home turn, and all she needed was a gap to appear in the final 200m. When the gap did appear, Shinn pushed the mare’s nose into the space, and she burst through to storm clear late and record an impressive victory, with Lady Jones ($16) and Grinzinger Belle filling the placings.
- The Group 1 Moir Stakes will headline the program at Moonee Valley, but seeing Amelia’s Jewel ($1.33) go around in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes was a very close second for all punters and spectators on track. The West Australian mare did not disappoint, as she proved a class above to take out the Stocks Stakes in dominant fashion under a very kind ride from jockey Damian Lane. Many spectators, including Simon Miller, were surprised to see the daughter of Siyouni settle second behind a tearaway leader in Pride Of Jenni ($16.00), but nothing was going to undo the eventual winner. Even though the leader tried to run all of her rivals off their legs, there was never any doubt around the race favourite and star mare Amelia’s Jewel, as she got off the leaders heels to idle straight past her and take over with 100m to go. Pride Of Jenni was able to hold on for second place, while Deny Knowledge ($10.00) ran home nicely into third place to fill the placings.
- Multiple Group winner Daisies showed all her class when coming from the rear of the field to claim the 2022 Stocks Stakes. On a night where it was a massive disadvantage to be settled in the second-half of the field, her chances look shot 100m into the event. However, with the leaders trying to run it at a farcically slow tempo, the race was set up perfectly for Damian Lane and Daisies ($6.50) who managed to loop the field and subsequently hold out the fast-finishing Elusive Express ($16), while race leader Lady Of Honour ($4.40) held on for third, beaten a head.
- The Shane Nichols-trained mare So You Assume was a rapid improver through the winter months, winning three of four starts in July and August and with a six week freshen-up behind her, the mare returned a winner in the Stocks Stakes. Under an inch-perfect front-running steer from Dean Yendall, So You Assume ($8.50) had her better credentialed rivals chasing a long way out. Magna Bella ($14) finished 1.5 lengths off the eventual winner, whilst Quauntum Mechanic ($5) nosed out race favourite Only Words ($4.60) back in third. It was all honours the winner though, as So You Assume handed Shane Nichols his third win in the Stocks Stacks with I Am A Star saluting in 2017 & 2018.
- There was little doubt that Mystic Journey was the class animal of the 2020 Stocks Stakes field and the legend from Tasmania further added to her already impressive career record. The Adam Trinder-trained mare was sent around as a $6.50 chance and despite being forced to travel three and four wide the trip, managed to grind down race favourite Perfect Jewel ($2.50) in a stirring battle down the Moonee Valley straight. With just a neck separating the two on the line, it was a further four lengths back to One More Try ($31) in third place.
- The David Brideoake-trained Princess Jenni ($3.90) came with a well-timed run under Damien Oliver to win the 2019 Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley, notching her fifth win from nine career starts. The winner of the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at three, Princess Jenni was having her second start since commencing her four-year-old career and made good improvement from her first-up seventh in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m). New Zealand-trained mare Rondinella ($8) was held up for a run at a crucial stage and finished second, while Oceanex ($5.50) found the line well for third to nab an all important Group Two placing.
