PUNTERS have been eagerly awaiting the return of Volpe Veloce which resumes at Te Rapa this Saturday.

The star filly of last season is now a more mature four-year-old mare which has been backed into an odds-on quote for the Distinction Hamilton Hotel Open Handicap.

The Richardson/Parker-trained daughter of Foxwedge won its first seven starts which included the Group 2 Eight Carat Classic at Ellerslie and the Karaka 3YO Mile on the same day as the Karaka Million.

Its connections have been restrained in not being tempted by group one racing and also the allure of travelling to Australia, but co-trainer Graham Richardson plans to tick one of those plans off the list this season.

“This is a lead-up to the Tarzino Trophy and the plan is to run in the Windsor Park Plate following that,” Richardson told HorseBetting.com.au.

“We don’t have any Australian plans at the moment. We’ve got the Captain Cook Stakes, The Telegraph, Thorndon Mile and the Easter Handicap at home.”

Richardson hasn’t dispelled thoughts of heading to Australia, but the Melbourne spring carnival looks off the table for the $240,000 NZB sales purchase.

“Who’s to say we won’t go to Sydney in the autumn? We’re just not sure at the moment,” Richardson said.

Volpe Veloce is the red-hot $1.60 favourite at Sportsbet.com.au to win on Saturday and it looks a banker for the quaddie. It gets in well on the weights at 54kg and it has been working well throughout the winter.

“She spelled well and we pre-trained her for awhile,” Richardson said. “She’s forward enough to run 1200m first up and I’m very happy with her.”

Richardson admitting to using this run as preparation for the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival and doesn’t pay much attention to the odds from bookmakers.

“I don’t really care what the bookmakers think, the horses don’t know what they’re paying,” he said.

If the $1.60 doesn’t appeal this Saturday, Volpe Veloce is currently paying $7 at Ladbrokes.com.au to win the Group 1 Tarzino Trophy and that’s great value at this stage in the betting.

At the top of the betting is Kawi at $4, but the fresh horse on the scene is Volpe Veloce and we would confidently back it in throughout the 2017/2018 season.
