2021 Standish Handicap Betting Preview
The annual Standish Handicap raced on New Year’s Day over the ‘Flemington Straight Six’ attracts a small field of eight for the 2021 version. Despite the small field, the standard is at an all-time high for the race worth $160,000 including the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint winner Graff from earlier in the Spring. The favourite for the Standish Handicap is the Phillip Stokes trained Defiant Dancer who has put together four consecutive wins over two campaigns, including a win over the track and distance.
The 2021 Standish Handicap is set to jump at 4:20pm AEDT.
Graff (#1)
Two runs back, the Danny O’Brien trained Graff was running away from proven Group 1 contender Fabergino and star gallopers such as Alfa Oro and Jungle Edge in the Caulfield Sprint. Fresh off a seven week break Graff gets back to the track and distance which saw him finish midfield to the world-class duo of Bivouac and Nature in the VRC Sprint Classic on Stakes Day. It’s safe to say that Graff is the clear class runner in the event, and if he can get a nice tow into the race from the leaders, his best will still be too good for this above average field.
Sirius Suspect (#4)
Saab Hasan and Jamie Kah will be looking to build on the Sirius Suspect’s impressive record down the Flemington straight. His only wins have come over the 1200m wins and on the back of a dominant win at Pakenham comes to this event third up where he has won on two occasions. He maps to be up on speed throughout the running, and Kah will look to dictate terms throughout as gelding likes to do down the ‘Flemington Straight Six’ and if they get a quiet time of it in front they’ll prove too hard to run down.
Morrissy (#3)
The Leon and Troy Corstens trained Morrissy has been racing in some top class races throughout this campaign and hasn’t been beaten far by the likes of Windstorm and Buffalo River in the process. This will be just the second start at Flemington this campaign and on the back of a narrow fourth over the 1400m at Flemington looks primed to run a big race over the 1200m. Craig Williams retains the ride, and knows this horse better than anyone, so we are backing him to run a huge race in the Standish Handicap.
