Smerdon: Lumosty can use Listed sprint to launch G1 campaign

Trainer Robert Smerdon hopes a stronger than anticipated Listed sprint at Flemington can be the launching pad to a campaign where Lumosty wins her first Group One race.

A top-level win is the target for Lumosty during the autumn, with sprints in two states on the radar for the multiple stakes winner.

Lumosty resumes in Saturday’s Listed Bob Hoysted Stakes (1000m) at Flemington armed with a strong fresh record having not finished worse than second in four first-up runs.

Should she perform to expectations the four-year-old is likely to head interstate.

“She’s won at Group Two level and we need some Group One form so we are tentatively looking at The Galaxy,” Smerdon said.

“And on the other side of that there’s the Group One mares’ race in Adelaide.”

Lumosty was an impressive winner down the straight at Flemington first-up two preparations ago while last campaign she made her return in the Group Two Caulfield Sprint and charged home late to dead-heat for first.

“It’s probably a bit deeper race than I envisaged when I was heading towards it, but she’s had a couple of soft trials and hasn’t been knocked around but she got the benefit out of them,” Smerdon said.

“I think she’s in a good spot.”

Lumosty, who has top weight with 58kg, is the $3.50 favourite.
