Smartypy on Ramornie Handicap mission

Trainer Chris Munce will set Ipswich winner Smartypy for the Ramornie Handicap at Grafton.

There were few tougher jockeys than Chris Munce and he has shown as a trainer he is still made of stern stuff.

Munce was kicked by a yearling on Saturday morning but was at Ipswich where he had six runners including winner Smartypy and stakes placed Skate to Paris.

“One of our yearlings lashed out and got me on the leg. It is sore but not too bad,” Munce said.

Smartypy is headed to the Ramornie Handicap at Grafton on July 10 after her strong win in a Class Six race.

“I was thinking of running her in the John Carlton down there to get into the Ramornie. But she should get in the Ramornie field now without another run,” Munce said.

“She has really come along in recent months and she was stakes placed at her previous run so I think she is up to Ramornie class.”

Smartypy is raced by a syndicate headed by Max Whitby who also races last year’s Grafton Cup winner First Crush with Munce.

“Max has always wanted to win the Cup and the Ramornie so this might be his chance, ” Munce said.

First Crush was unplaced in Saturday’s Ipswich Cup in which he was second last year.
