Sir John Monash Stakes 2020 betting tips & strategy

Intuition
Trainer Kurt Goldman has no qualms about sending Intuition to Victoria despite the COVID-19 spike.

The Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes over 1100m is the feature race at Caulfield on Saturday, where Viridine will jump as the favourite. The speed looks to be hot over the sprint journey, with Jungle Edge, Snitzkraft, Ashlor, Tavisan and I Am Someone all looking to be the lamp lighter. The race is scheduled to kick off at 3:35pm AEST as the seventh event on the card.

Best Bet
Intuition @ $13 Sportsbet

Having recently acquired the talented Intuition from the Godolphin stable, NSW-based trainer Kurt Goldman opted to scratch his new runner from the Ramornie Handicap at Grafton on Wednesday and head down to Victoria instead. Goldman has not been able to get the Street Cry gelding back home due to new COVID restrictions, so the decision to start him at Caulfield this weekend suggests to us that the horse is flying. The speed will be hot, which will allow Dyawne Dunn to get back and run home over the top of them from barrier eight. Dunn and Goldman have a 33% win rate together, so the combination is worth following. A two-time winner over 1100m and great second-up form looks a winning formula here, especially at the $13 quote.

Second Best
Viridine @ $2.50 Sportsbet

Viridine is most definitely a deserving favourite and the one to beat after a brilliant win at Randwick three weeks ago. He is a three-time winner over 1100m and gets the services of Damien Oliver here. He is another get-back runner and, from barrier two, he should land midfield on the fence and weave his way through the field in the straight. His last win over Handle The Truth and Southern Lad in the Winter Dash on a Heavy 9 track was ultra-impressive, getting home by over a length with a further length-and-a-half back to third. If the runs come, he is the one to beat.

Next Best
Jungle Edge @ $4.60 Sportsbet

Whenever Jungle Edge is running, the first point of call is to check the track conditions to see if it’s wet or not. The soft going brings the nine-year-old marvel right into contention, with all 18 wins in his career coming on a wet track. On his last start in Sydney, he ran fifth behind Classique Legend in a race where Viridine came fourth, so he has to be considered for this, especially with the price discrepancy. Jade Darose will push forward on the gelding from barrier six and it will be up to the other horses to get past him. A big concern for us at HorseBetting.com.au is that there is a stack of speed, which could cause Jungle Edge to feel the pinch in the straight. He has placed seven times at Caulfield and races well when fresh, so it is impossible to put a line through him on the soft going.
