Single Gaze preparing well for Caulfield and Melbourne Cup tilt

CANBERRA-based trainer Nick Olive was bullish about the chances of Single Gaze in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup.

The five-year-old mare hasn’t raced over 2400m since falling in the 2016 ATC Oaks, but its form over 2000m-2400m has been impressive since and it looks a legitimate chance of winning the $3 million feature.

A solid run for fourth in last week’s Group 1 Caulfield Stakes has Single Gaze ticking over nicely.

“She came through that run beautifully. She’s pulled up really well, she’s bright and probably the best she’s been in preparation all week,” Olive told Horsebetting, who isn’t worried about the quick back-up.

“I think that suits her. She backed up from the O’Shea to the Brisbane Cup in the winter. She had to carry a record weight that day, 59 kilos, and she went super.

“I thought it was one of the best runs that campaign.”

Ladbrokes sign up special

Olive is looking forward to seeing what the daughter of Not a Single Doubt can do over 2400m and the $41 chance at Neds.com.au looks likely to handle to rise in trip.

“We are looking forward to seeing what she’d do over 2400m,” Olive said. “We’ve always thought she would flourish over that distance.

“We’re looking forward to the run and hopefully finally getting over the distance.”

All going well following the Caulfield Cup, Single Gaze will likely run in the Melbourne Cup where it’s currently a $201 chance at Sportsbet.com.au.

“She’s already got a spot in the Melbourne Cup. She’s about 13th in the order of entry,” Olive said.

“She won’t be going unless I feel she could be competitive. We’re not going there to make up the numbers and she needs to be competitive on the day.

“If I feel that after Saturday, there’s a strong possibility she might go there.”

Olive has been in Melbourne for the last two weeks and said the atmosphere is starting to liven up.

“It is starting to build up and it’s been great,” he added.
