Sherry has high hopes for Marway after Wagga Town Plate win

Marway wins Wagga Town Plate

Apprentice hoop Tom Sherry made the trek to Wagga for just one ride on Thursday afternoon, but it proved a fruitful journey as his mount, Marway, scorched the turf to win the Wagga Town Plate by four lengths.

The five-year-old son of Hemingway jumped brilliantly from barrier eight and went straight to the front in what was a simple watch for punters.

After opening as a $5 chance with some online bookmakers, the Mark Newnham-trained gelding started as short as $2.70.

The former Rockhampton sprinter has won four of his six starts since moving to New South Wales, including a track record on the Kensington circuit at Randwick over 1150m on March 10th.

Sherry was full of praise for Marway and believes he can continue to go through the grades.

“He is building himself a nice record now,” he said.

“Hopefully he can keep going through the grades and pick up a nice cheque at the end of the season.”

Marway ran 1:08.48 for the 1200m contest and did the last 600m in 34 seconds flat, and that feat was not lost on Sherry.

“You know you’ve got a good horse when they maintain that high cruising speed and show a good kick off it,” he said.

“He has a great turn of foot off a high speed and that’s what’s going to win him races.

“There’s plenty of races for these sprinters about and the boss is magical at picking them out.”

Newnham has earmarked the June Stakes as a potential target race, but nothing is set in stone yet.

Marway joined the Sydney stable halfway through 2020 but was not seen at the trials until January 7th, before winning in dogged fashion first up at Warwick Farm.

His final run in Queensland saw him salute in the 2020 Capricorn Yearling Sales QTIS 3&4YO Handicap in a swansong for trainer John O’Sing, who also trained the Rockhampton rocket, Our Boy Malachi.

Our Boy Malachi was a dual Group 2 winner who also placed in the Group 1 BTC Cup and finished fourth in the 2016 TJ Smith Stakes behind Chautauqua when trained by John, Michael & Wayne Hawkes.

Marway has hit the ground running in New South Wales and now looks ready for stakes grade over the Spring Carnival.
