Shadows Cast to bypass Tarzino

Metric mile features have become the focus for talented Manawatu galloper Shadows Cast.

The postponement of Tuesday’s trials at Foxton to next Tuesday has left Awapuni trainer Mark Oulaghan with a less-than-desirable pathway to Saturday week’s Group 1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings and has led to the likely withdrawal of Shadows Cast from the weight-for-age sprint.

“We were hoping to trial him today and that hasn’t happened. We’ve decided not to trial at Taupo [on Wednesday] so we’ll give the first day at Hastings a miss,” Oulaghan said.

“He handles soft going to a point but I don’t want to kick him off on a track that doesn’t suit. We’ll just have to be a bit flexible and do the right thing by the horse.”

Shadows Cast was assured of a start in the Tarzino Trophy and now means both Son Of Maher and Wyndspelle have made the starting 16.

Oulaghan will bide his time with Shadows Cast, suggesting the Group 1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) at Hastings on September 22 could be the new starting point.

“He hasn’t done a lot of galloping but what he’s done, he’s done pretty well. We’re happy with him,” Oulaghan said. Safely through the Windsor Park Plate, for which Shadows Cast is at $41 with TAB bookmakers, the Per Incanto six-year-old will head for the Group 2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (1600m) at Riccarton on November 14 and the Group 1 Rydes Wellington Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) at Trentham on December 8.

Shadows Cast deadheated in the Coupland’s Mile (1600m) last year with Son Of Maher and has raced at Group 1 level on three occasions, finishing sixth each time over 1600m, in the Levin Classic, Thorndon Mile and Haunui Farm Classic.
