What Sha Tin Races
Where Sha Tin Racecourse – Tai Po Rd, Sha Tin District, Hong Kong
When Sunday, May 21, 2023
First Race 1pm HKT (3pm AEST)

Hong Kong racing is back on Sunday afternoon as Sha Tin Racecourse plays host to a strong 10-race program. The rail is out in the C+3 position, meaning we’ll be looking at gallopers prominent in the run, with the rail traditionally running hot. We’re optimistic about the weather forecast for race-day; however, there is a chance we will have some rain affected ground. The first race is set to get underway at 1:00pm HKT (3:00pm AEST).

Best Bet at Sha Tin: Round The Earth

The fifth race on the program is a Class 4 over the 1800m and we’re keen to be with Round The Earth coming back in grade. He’s been consistent without much luck in Class 3 company, with his latest effort at Happy Valley on April 26 being an admirable one considering the circumstances. He drew barrier 12 on that occasion and was forced back to a clear last turning for home – and while he was powering to the line, was never in winning contention. This seems like a much more suitable set up for this son of Savabeel, getting to the bigger Sha Tin circuit and with barrier three, should see Zac Purton gather the saloon passage right behind the leaders. Round The Earth is yet to find a Hong Kong win since arriving this season, but this is undoubtedly his best opportunity to produce his first for the David Hall barn.

Next Best at Sha Tin: Sunlight Power

Sunlight Power has only had one start to his name; however, we like what we saw on debut from this three-year-old on April 15. This gelding by Capitalist missed the kick before jockey Karis Teetan took his medicine, electing to head back to the rear of the field on Sunlight Power. Punters would’ve been set to throw their tickets away, but he produced an enormous effort, slicing between gallopers to find the frame. It was the debut of a horse with plenty of upside, and this time with a bit more luck in transit, Sunlight Power looks hard to beat in the Sha Tin Opener. Karis Teetan elects to stick on this progressive type and trainer Ricky Yiu may be unearthing a very talented galloper late in the Hong Kong racing season.

Next Best Again at Sha Tin: Tuchel

We’ll be heading to the penultimate race of the meeting to be backing the ultra-consistent Tuchel for the John Size yard. Many may have thought he’d peaked in the preparation after running second in the Hong Kong Derby; however, his run since over the 1400m was sensational in Class 2 company. He ran into Beauty Eternal, who could be a Group quality galloper in the making, and never shirked the task, finding the minor money for the fifth time in 12 starts. Tuchel now steps back up to the 1600m and with Zac Purton reunited with this son of Redwood, we’re confident he can repay the faith to followers to score a win on Sunday afternoon. He must lug the top weight of 61kg here, but we think he’s classy enough to do the job.

Best Value at Sha Tin: California Deeply

California Deeply has been a frustrating horse for punters, always seemingly finding the blackbook with big performances from back in the field. He did exactly that last start at Happy Valley on April 26, leaving most pundits wondering why he’s yet to step to the 1200m. We tend to agree with that sentiment; however, we look at the last time California Deeply found the Sha Tin 1000m straight on April 9, we’re of the opinion this could be where this son of Deep Field finds his peak. He drew the unsuitable gate one on that occasion and was terrific finishing in behind track and distance specialist We Are Hero. This time he draws perfectly in barrier 10 and we just need claiming apprentice Angus Chung to get California Deeply to jump evenly. If he does, his electrifying best should see this perennial placegetter find his fourth career win.
