The final chance to get into the $500,000 Country Championships Final on Day 1 of The Championships is through Sunday’s $50,000 Wild Card race at Scone. HorseBetting’s Nicholas Lloyd brings you his top selection in the feature race, as well as his best bets and quaddie numbers for the whole afternoon. The track is rated a Soft 5 and the rail is in the true position for the entire course, which should give every horse a chance down the big open straight at Scone. The first race on the eight-part program will get underway at 12:55pm AEDT.
Country Championships Wild Card Best Bet – Cavalier Charles
Put simply, if Cavalier Charles runs like he has in his past three starts, he will be winning. The Matthew Dale-trained five-year-old won by two lengths first-up at the Sapphire Coast in a Class 2 defeating Shelby Sixtysix who is a subsequent Group 2 winner and is lining up at Group 1 level in The Galaxy on Saturday at Rosehill Gardens. Since then, Cavalier Charles hit the line strongly in the Qualifier at Nowra to run fourth, just half a length of Testator Silens and To The Nines, before he sprouted wings at Canberra last Sunday to win in Benchmark 75 company over 1200m after bundling the start from the outside alley. He has drawn much kinder in barrier five on Sunday to ensure he gets a good run in transit, while the rise to 1400m should suit this son of Denman. Watch for him late.
Best Bet at Scone – Eurydice
In the opening race of the day, Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou saddle up two-year-old filly Eurydice in a very winnable 2YO Showcase Handicap over 1000m. The field of 12 consists of six first starters, while the six gallopers that have made their debuts have not done much outside of this daughter of Rubick. After a nice trial in September, Eurydice stepped out for the first time in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes where she failed to beat a runner home behind Coolangatta, before spelling and returning for the autumn. She trialled well at the end of January, narrowly missing to Seven Veils, before running third to Promitto and Richon at Newcastle in a 900m 2YO Maiden on February 12. She will improve at the 1000m second up, while barrier one is a big advantage as she won’t have to do any work early. We expect her to be too good for these.
Next Best at Scone – In The Blink
Kris Lees will be hoping that three-year-old filly In The Blink can breakthrough at start nine, when she lines up in a Maiden Handicap over 1300m. The filly by Pierro has been runner up on two occasions, including a last-start second at Newcastle over 1200m on a Heavy 8 track. Now third-up and onto an improving surface, we expect this galloper to be too strong for her rivals over 1300m. Christian Reith will hop aboard the $52,000 earner from gate five, which should see her have every chance to get the job done. It’s now or never for In The Blink.
Best Value at Scone – Read My Future
Annabel Neasham and Shaun Guymer combine in the fourth with four-year-old gelding Read My Future. The son of Nostradamus won his maiden on the Ballarat Synthetic last May when known as Yulong Prediction, but after he was sold and transferred to Neasham, new connections changed the gelding’s name to Read My Future. In his two runs for Neasham, he beat only one runner home at Hawkesbury when five lengths behind Retrieval and Ruby Kisses, before running a much-improved fifth to Rosovo at Newcastle on March 5 over 1500m. Neasham has stepped him out to 1700m on Sunday and he lines up in a Class 1 & Maiden Plate, so he should have the wood on some of these horses who will quite frankly struggle to ever win a race.
