Scone Cup tips, odds & value bets – Friday, 15 May 2020

Live And Free racing news
The John O’Shea-trained Live And Free is one of the main chances in the 1600m Scone Cup this Friday.

Although the traditional two-day Scone Carnival has been split between Scone (Friday) and Rosehill Gardens (Saturday) this year, we still have a full field to fight out the Listed Scone Cup (1600m). With a little bit of rain around Scone, we can expect to race on a Soft track. The rail is in the true position, so we can expect the big Scone track to play evenly for its feature race day.

Best bets for Scone Cup 2020

Race favourite Archedemus will look to control the race but may have to work for it from barrier 18. Dr Drill will search for the box seat behind a couple that will press forward to avoid a wide run like Cutadeel and Chief Ironside.

Live And Free was super first up when held up for a run in the straight before motoring late to finish second behind Amangiri in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup. Second up and rising to 1600m will suit the John O’Shea gelding here and we expect him to figure right in the finish. While Jeff Penza will have to snag him back towards the tail from barrier 13, we see him settling three deep with plenty of cover and using the long straight at Scone to finish over the top. We are happy to be on around the $6 mark.

James Cummings saddles up last-start Sydney winner Phaistos in Friday’s feature race. The 4yo by Helmet will enjoy the 5.5kg weight relief and can only be fitter third up and to the mile. Grant Buckley has a 25% win rate when combining with Team Godolphin in the past 12 months and will be hoping to add to his record here. Drawn in barrier nine, Phaistos will have every chance to keep its unbeaten record at Scone.

Royal Tudor presents as a live rough chance coming off a fast-finishing third in the Tamworth Cup last start. Ceejay Graham will most likely be last on cornering from barrier 17 and may have too much to do, but the horse is flying and has to be respected. With three wins and three placings at the track from 10 goes, the Rodney Ollerton gelding will be hitting the line well and must be included in multiples.
