Savile’s sights set on Melbourne’s spring

 Saville Row

GROUP one-level galloper Savile Row is set to cross the Tasman in search of a breakthrough top-tier victory that will complete his stallion CV.

The rising four-year-old has finished runner-up three times at the top level from the Matamata stable of Michael Moroney and Pam Gerard.

Moroney will now guide the colt’s future from his Flemington operation, and stable representative Johnny Scully believes punters will see a much improved galloper once it returns to the track.

“Savile Row left for Melbourne this morning,” Scully said, who is racing manager for breeder-owner Kevin Hickman.

“He’s done four or five weeks work here and we’ve mixed it up.

“He’s been on the treadmill and up the hills in the farm paddocks. We’ve kept it varied and he’s been loving it, his brain’s in a good space.

“He has matured a lot and he’s a completely different horse this time around.”

A son of Makfi and the winning English-bred Daylami mare Fleece, Savile Row has won two of its eight starts and was runner-up in three of New Zealand’s biggest group ones including the New Zealand 2000 Guineas, the G Levin Classic and against the older horses in the Herbie Dyke Stakes.

The only true disappointing run of the horse’s career to date was a lacklustre eighth in the 2017 NZ Derby.

Scully believes Savile Row’s trainer will elect to kick off the horse’s campaign in the opening weeks of September in Melbourne.

“Mike is looking at kicking him off in the Bobbie Lewis, a Group Two over 1200 metres at Flemington on September 16 and he normally goes very well fresh,” Scully said.

“After that, Mike will look for the next step and it’s all about picking the right options to make a stallion. In the dream world he would end up in the Cox Plate.”
